Design Hardware F1000V-33-US26 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Design Hardware F1000V 33 inch exit device fit a 32 inch wide door?
Yes, with a cut. The 33 inch F1000V is sized for 3'-0" wide doors, and the device can be cut down to fit a door as narrow as 2'-8" (32 inches). For doors from 3'-8" to 4'-0" wide you want the 42 inch version instead, which cuts down to 3'-4".
2) What is the minimum stile width for the Design Hardware 1000V surface vertical rod device?
4-1/2 inches. The center case measures 8 inch height x 2-7/8 inch wide x 2-13/16 inch thick and needs that 4-1/2 inch stile to land on. On aluminum storefront doors with narrower stiles, a narrow stile device like the Von Duprin 3327A or Corbin Russwin ED4400 is the right family instead.
3) What is a fire rated alternative to the Design Hardware F1000V surface vertical rod device?
Fire rated surface vertical rod devices we carry alongside it include the Adams Rite 3100 Series (Grade 1, wide stile, 1-3/4 inch doors), the Arrow S1150 in the fire rated version (narrow or wide stile), the Sargent 2727 (Grade 1, wide stile, exit only), and the TownSteel EF9727 (Grade 1, heavy duty, wide stile, wood door compatible). Many popular vertical rod devices, including the Von Duprin 2227 and Falcon 25-V-EO, are not fire rated, so they cannot go on a labeled opening.
4) Do I need to order the F1000V exit device handed?
No. It ships right hand reverse and is re-handed in the field, so one part covers either swing. The device is described as completely reversible, which is what a property manager stocking spares for a building wants.
5) Can I use this vertical rod device on a pair of doors without a mullion?
Yes. A surface vertical rod device latches at the head and at the floor rather than into a strike on the frame edge, so a pair of doors can be secured without a center mullion. The 1000V uses a U shaped top latch into a strike and a drop bolt bottom latch that engages a flat strike and a hole in the floor.
6) Can I tie an electric strike into the top latch of the Design Hardware 1000V?
No. The U shaped top latch on the 1000V is not electric strike compatible. If you need electrified access control on this opening, use the device's own electrified options: ELR motorized electric latch retraction, ED electric dogging, REX request to exit, or LBM latch bolt monitoring.
7) Will the 33 inch 1000V work on a 9 foot tall door?
Yes, with extended top rods. Standard rod length covers 7'-0" doors; extended top rods are available for doors up to 10'-0" tall. Specify the door height when you order so the correct top rod ships.
8) What comes in the box with the F1000V, and what has to be ordered separately?
Fasteners are included (wood, machine and self tapping machine screws, and the F1000V specifically includes thru bolts), along with a latch filler. Exterior trim, shim kits and other accessories are separate line items, as are cylinder dogging kits and extended top rods for tall doors. Lever trim is what gets the opening to ADA compliance under ANSI A117.1.
9) My opening is a narrow stile aluminum storefront door - is the F1000V the right vertical rod device?
The F1000V center case measures 8 inches high by 2-7/8 inches wide by 2-13/16 inches thick and requires a minimum 4-1/2 inch stile, so it suits wide stile openings. For a narrow stile door, narrow stile surface vertical rod devices include the Von Duprin 3327A for 36 inch doors, the Von Duprin 7527 in the 75 Series, the Corbin Russwin ED4400 Grade 1, the Falcon 19-V-EO, and the TownSteel ED3727. The Arrow S1150 is listed for narrow or wide stile.
10) How does dogging work on the F1000V, and can I add a cylinder dogging later?
Standard dogging is 5/32 inch hex key, which holds the pushbar depressed for free ingress during business hours. Cylinder dogging kits are available for new or existing devices, so you can convert later. Note that on a fire rated opening dogging must not be used to hold the latches retracted.
11) How much does this exit device project off the face of the door?
3-3/8 inches with the pushbar neutral and undogged, dropping to 2-13/16 inches when dogged and the pushbar is depressed. Use the 3-3/8 inch figure when you are checking clearance to a wall, a second leaf, or an adjacent door swing.
12) What do I need to undercut the door for the bottom rod to latch?
A 1/4 inch door undercut is recommended for openings with a 1/4 inch threshold or no threshold at all. The bottom latch is a drop bolt that drops into a flat strike and a hole in the floor, so the undercut and the floor prep both have to be right for it to engage.
13) Is a Grade 1 heavy duty vertical rod device overkill for a low traffic back door?
The 1000V is built for medium to heavy use with an extruded anodized aluminum channel and steel chassis, which is what a school or retail exit gets. On a light duty non-labeled opening, a Grade 2 device such as the TownSteel TS5100 or the Dexter ED2000 Series covers the code requirement at a lower duty level. Neither of those is fire rated, so a labeled door still needs the fire rated 1000V.
14) I need a reversible vertical rod device so I do not have to specify handing - how does the F1000V compare?
The F1000V ships right hand reverse and is completely reversible, re-handed in the field without special parts. Comparable non-handed or reversible units include the Sargent 2727, a Grade 1 fire rated reversible wide stile device, the Von Duprin 2227 non-handed 36 inch wide stile Grade 1 device, the BEST Precision 5201 reversible 36 inch device, and the Orca OED56 non-handed 36 inch device.
15) Is there a lighter duty or Grade 2 alternative to the F1000V for a low traffic non-rated exit?
Yes. The TownSteel TS5100 Series is a Grade 2 heavy duty wide stile surface vertical rod device for 36 by 84 inch doors, and the Dexter ED2000 Series is a Grade 2 surface vertical rod panic device; both are non fire rated. The Orca OED56 is a standard duty, non-handed 36 inch vertical rod device supplied less bottom rod and exit only. The F1000V is a Grade 1 device rated for medium to heavy use.
16) What should I order instead of the F1000V if I need a crossbar style push rail rather than a push pad?
The Corbin Russwin ED7400 is a Grade 1 narrow stile crossbar surface vertical rod exit device for 36 inch doors that accepts operator trim. The F1000V uses a pushbar with 5/32 inch hex key dogging standard and a 3-3/8 inch projection undogged, dropping to 2-13/16 inch with the pushbar depressed.
17) If I only need a dummy or inactive leaf device on a fire rated pair, is the F1000V the right choice?
No. The F1000V is an active panic exit device, UL listed for panic exit hardware with latching top and bottom. For an inactive leaf, the Sargent 12-8710 is a fire rated Grade 1 wide stile surface vertical rod device with a dummy function.
18) Are there Grade 1 vertical rod alternatives to the F1000V in a 30 inch device length for a narrower door?
Yes. The Adams Rite 3100 Series is a 30 inch fire rated Grade 1 wide stile surface vertical rod device, the Adams Rite 8100 Series is a 30 inch wide stile unit and the 8200 Series a 30 inch narrow stile unit, and the Arrow S1150 is a 30 inch fire rated device. The F1000V 33 inch device covers 3'-0" doors and can be cut down to fit a 2'-8" wide door.
19) What finishes does the 33 inch Design Hardware 1000V come in?
Five: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 613 dark bronze, 625 bright chrome, and 630 satin stainless steel, applied to the headcover, pushbar, endcap and latches. For coastal or pool environments a marine grade 316 stainless steel option is available.
