Design Hardware F1000V-42-US26 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Design Hardware F1000V surface vertical rod device fit a 4 foot wide door?
Yes. The 1000V comes in two lengths: 33 inches for 3'-0" wide doors and 42 inches for doors 3'-8" to 4'-0" wide. So a 4 foot leaf takes the 42 inch device. If your opening falls between the two, both can be cut down, the 33 inch to fit a 2'-8" door and the 42 inch to fit a 3'-4" door.
2) What is the minimum stile width for the Design Hardware 1000V exit device?
4-1/2 inches. The center case measures 8" height x 2-7/8" wide x 2-13/16" thick and needs that 4-1/2 inch stile to land on. That puts the 1000V in wide stile territory, so on a narrow stile aluminum storefront door it will not fit. For those openings a narrow stile device like the Corbin Russwin ED4400 or the Von Duprin 3327A is the right family.
3) Do I have to order handed, or can I re-hand a Design Hardware 1000V in the field?
No handed ordering. The 1000V ships RHR and re-hands in the field, and the device is described as completely reversible. One part number covers both hands, which is what you want if you are stocking spares for a building rather than ordering per opening.
4) Can I use a surface vertical rod exit device on a pair of doors with no center mullion?
That is exactly what a surface vertical rod device is for. The 1000V latches at the head and at the floor rather than into the jamb, so a pair of doors can be secured without a removable mullion. The top latch is a U shape that engages a strike at the header, and the bottom is a drop bolt that drops into a flat strike and a hole in the floor. A rim device, by contrast, throws into the frame or a mullion, so on a mullion-less pair it will not latch the inactive leaf.
5) Can I hold the door unlatched during business hours with the Design Hardware 1000V?
Yes, hex key dogging is standard on the panic version and uses a 5/32 inch hex key, which holds the pushbar depressed so the door pushes open free. Cylinder dogging kits are available if you would rather dog it with a key than a hex wrench, and those kits fit new or existing devices. One caution: mechanical dogging is a panic feature. On a fire rated opening the device cannot be dogged, so plan on electric dogging or latch retraction instead.
6) Can I use an electric strike with the Design Hardware 1000V vertical rod device?
No. The top latch is a U shape built to engage a conventional strike, and it is not electric strike compatible. For access control on this device, go to the electrified options instead: ELR for motorized electric latch retraction, ED for electric dogging, REX for request to exit, and LBM for latch bolt monitoring.
7) What do I need to order with the Design Hardware 1000V for a 9 or 10 foot tall door?
Extended top rods. Standard build covers a 7'-0" door height; extended top rods are available for doors up to 10'-0" tall. Note the fire listing tops out at 8'-0" x 10'-0", so a 10 foot tall fire door is within the rating but needs those longer rods specified on the order.
8) What comes in the box with the Design Hardware F1000V, and what do I have to buy separately?
The device ships with wood, machine and self tapping machine screws, and the F1000V specifically includes thru bolts, which is what a fire rated wood door install usually calls for. A latch filler is included as well. Exterior trim is separate, and so are shim kits and the other accessories, so if you need outside key or lever access, that trim is a line item of its own.
9) What else could I buy instead of the Design Hardware F1000V if I need a fire rated surface vertical rod device?
Three other fire rated surface vertical rod options are worth looking at. The TownSteel 9700 Series EF9727 is the closest match: heavy duty, Grade 1 certified, wide stile, fire rated, and rated for wood doors, in a 36 x 84 size. The Adams Rite 3100 Series is fire rated wide stile Grade 1 for 1-3/4 inch doors in a 30 inch length. The Arrow S1150 is fire rated and works on either narrow or wide stile, exit only and less trim. Where the F1000V stands apart in that group is the two length range, 33 and 42 inch, so it reaches a 4 foot wide leaf that a 30 or 36 inch device does not.
10) Which surface vertical rod exit device should I use on a narrow stile aluminum door instead of the Design Hardware F1000V?
The F1000V needs a 4-1/2 inch minimum stile, so a narrow stile aluminum door calls for a narrow stile device. Fire rated openings take the Arrow S1150, which is listed for narrow or wide stile and fire rated for 1-3/4 inch doors. For non fire rated narrow stile openings, the Von Duprin 3327A and the Corbin Russwin ED4400 are both Grade 1 narrow stile devices for 36 inch doors and 1-3/4 inch thickness, and the Adams Rite 8200 Series is a Grade 1 narrow stile device in a 30 inch length.
11) What should I use instead of the Design Hardware F1000V if the door has no floor strike or an uneven threshold?
A bottom rod is the constraint. The F1000V uses a drop bolt style bottom latch that secures into a flat strike and a hole in the floor, and it recommends a 1/4 inch door undercut for a 1/4 inch threshold or no threshold opening. Where a floor prep is not possible, the Orca Hardware OED56 Series is a 36 inch exit only surface vertical rod device supplied less bottom rod for 1-3/4 inch doors, though it is not fire rated and is a standard duty device rather than heavy duty.
12) I need a device that accepts lever trim, not an exit only bar. Which ones work?
The Design Hardware F1000V meets ADA requirements under ANSI A117.1 with lever trim, and exterior trims are available alongside it. Among the alternatives, the Corbin Russwin ED5400 and ED4400 are Grade 1 devices that accept trim, and the ED7400 accepts operator trim. Devices listed as exit only, including the Falcon 19-V-EO, 24-V-EO and 25-V-EO, the Arrow 3700 Series, the Sargent 2727 and 3727, and the Orca OED56, have no outside operation and are used where the door is entered another way.
13) Does the electric strike I planned work with the Design Hardware F1000V, and what should I look at instead?
No. The F1000V uses a U shaped top latch for secure engagement with the strike and it is not electric strike compatible. Where the opening needs electrified control, the F1000V itself is available with motorized electric latch retraction, electric dogging, request to exit and latch bolt monitoring, which handles the access control without a strike. If a crossbar device with operator trim suits the opening better, the Corbin Russwin ED7400 is a Grade 1 narrow stile device that accepts operator trim.
14) How much clearance do I need under the door for the Design Hardware 1000V bottom latch?
A 1/4 inch door undercut is what Design Hardware recommends, suited to a 1/4 inch threshold or an opening with no threshold at all. The bottom latch is a drop bolt that needs to reach a flat strike and a hole in the floor, so if your existing door is undercut much more than that, or you have a tall saddle threshold in the way, sort that out before you set the bottom rod.
15) How far does the Design Hardware 1000V push bar stick out from the door?
Projection is 3-3/8 inches undogged with the pushbar at neutral, and 2-13/16 inches dogged with the pushbar depressed. That matters in a tight vestibule or where a door swings past a wall return, and it matters for the clear width of the opening once the device is mounted.
16) Does the Design Hardware 1000V meet ADA for a barrier free opening?
With lever trim, yes, it meets ADA requirements under ANSI A117.1. The push side needs no grasping at all, that is the nature of a panic bar, so the pull side trim is what decides compliance. Specify lever trim rather than a knob or a pull if the opening has to be ADA compliant.
17) Is the Design Hardware 1000V heavy duty enough for a school or a high traffic entrance?
It is built for medium to heavy commercial use, with a heavy duty extruded anodized aluminum channel over a steel chassis, and it meets ANSI A156.3 Grade 1. Grade 1 is the top commercial tier for exit devices and is what an institutional spec normally calls for. Design Hardware also calls it the simplest to maintain of the family, which is worth something when your own staff services the doors.
18) Can I order the Design Hardware 1000V less bottom rod to keep the rod off the floor?
Yes, less bottom rod is an option, and it is a common choice where the floor gets mopped or where a bottom rod would be a trip and damage risk. The tradeoff is the fire listing: with LBR the device is listed up to 8'-0" x 8'-0" rather than 8'-0" x 10'-0". If you want an LBR device out of the gate from another brand, the Orca Hardware OED56 Series is a standard duty 36 inch vertical rod device supplied less bottom rod, non-handed, though it is not fire rated.
19) Is there a cheaper standard duty vertical rod device if this is an interior door that is not a fire or egress door?
If the opening does not need the Grade 1 heavy duty build of the 1000V, a Grade 2 device covers lower traffic. The TownSteel TS5100 Series is a heavy duty Grade 2 wide stile surface vertical rod in a 36 x 84 size, and the Dexter ED2000 Series is a Grade 2 vertical rod panic device. Neither is fire rated, so they are only for unlabeled openings. On a labeled door or a main egress path, stay with the fire rated Grade 1 F1000V.
20) Can I standardize a whole building on the Design Hardware 1000V across different door widths and hands?
It is a reasonable fleet choice. One device re-hands in the field, so you are not tracking left and right stock. Two lengths cover 2'-8" through 4'-0" once you account for cutdown, and the same five finishes run across both. The fire rated F1000V and the panic version share the same body, so the look stays consistent between your labeled stair doors and your unlabeled openings, and the 4-1/2 inch stile requirement is the one constraint to check door by door.
21) Is the Sargent 12-8710 an alternative to the Design Hardware F1000V?
No. The Sargent 12-8710 is a dummy function device in the 8700 Series wide stile design, so it provides the push bar appearance without a working latch and is used on the inactive leaf or where no egress latching is needed. The F1000V is a functioning panic exit device with a U shaped top latch and a drop bolt style bottom latch that secures into a flat strike and a hole in the floor. For a Sargent device that actually latches on a rated opening, the 2727 is the exit only Grade 1 fire rated version.
22) Which surface vertical rod exit devices are non handed or field reversible like the Design Hardware F1000V?
The F1000V is completely reversible and is easily re-handed in the field, shipping as RHR. The Von Duprin 2227 is a non handed wide stile Grade 1 device for 36 inch doors, the Sargent 2727 is a reversible Grade 1 fire rated device, the BEST Precision 5201 is a reversible 36 inch device, and the Orca OED56 is non handed. Ordering a handed device means committing to the swing before the door is set.
23) Which surface vertical rod exit devices can go on a wood door?
The TownSteel EF9727, ED3727 and ED8927 are all listed as wood door compatible, with the EF9727 being the fire rated Grade 1 heavy duty one of the three. The Von Duprin 7527 and 7827 are listed as not wood door compatible. The Design Hardware F1000V ships with wood, machine and self tapping machine screws, and the F1000V includes thru bolts.
24) I want hex key dogging on a surface vertical rod device. What are my options besides the Design Hardware F1000V?
The F1000V comes with 5/32 inch hex key dogging standard, with cylinder dogging kits available for new or existing devices. The Von Duprin 7827 is a 3 ft Grade 1 wide stile surface vertical rod device supplied with hex key dogging for 1-3/4 inch doors. Note that hex key dogging is a non rated feature by nature, and the 7827 is not fire rated, so a rated opening keeps you on the F1000V.
25) I want a crossbar exit device, not a push pad. Does the Design Hardware 1000V come that way?
The 1000V is a pushbar device, not a crossbar. If your building is standardized on the older crossbar look, the Corbin Russwin ED7400 is a narrow stile crossbar surface vertical rod device, Grade 1, for 1-3/4 inch doors, and it accepts operator trim. Worth knowing that it is not fire rated, so it is not a swap on a labeled door where the F1000V would be required.
26) What is the difference between a push bar exit device like the Design Hardware F1000V and a crossbar device?
The F1000V uses a push bar in an extruded anodized aluminum channel with a projection of 3-3/8 inches undogged and 2-13/16 inches dogged. The Corbin Russwin ED7400 is a Grade 1 narrow stile crossbar surface vertical rod device that accepts operator trim, so the actuating bar spans the door rather than sitting in a channel. Sargent's 3727 is a Grade 1 wide stile device with a standard push bar, matching the push bar style of the F1000V.
