Design Hardware F2000V-42-AL – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Design Hardware F2000V 42 inch exit device fit a 3'-6" wide door, and can it be cut down?
The 42 inch F2000V covers doors 3'-8" to 4'-0" wide as supplied, and it can be cut down to fit a door as narrow as 3'-4", so a 3'-6" door is within range. For a 3'-0" door use the 33 inch device instead, which cuts down to 2'-8".
2) Is the F2000V vertical rod device fire rated, and to what door size?
Yes. The 2000V Series surface vertical rod device is UL Listed for panic exit hardware and fire rated for 3 hour doors up to 8'-0" x 10'-0". In a less-bottom-rod configuration the fire rating covers doors up to 8'-0" x 8'-0".
3) Can I use this on a pair of doors without a mullion?
That is what a surface vertical rod device is for. The F2000V latches at the head with a U-shaped top latch and at the floor with a drop bolt style bottom latch, so a pair of doors is secured without a center mullion. A rim device on the same pair would require a mullion between the leaves.
4) Does the bottom latch need a floor strike, and how much undercut should the door have?
The drop bolt bottom latch secures into a flat strike and a hole in the floor, so the threshold or floor has to be prepped. A 1/4 inch door undercut is recommended for openings with a 1/4 inch threshold or no threshold at all. If you cannot prep the floor, a less bottom rod configuration is the route.
5) The stile on my aluminum storefront door is too narrow for a 4 inch center case. What vertical rod device should I use instead of the F2000V?
The Design Hardware F2000V center case measures 6 inches high by 2-5/16 inches wide by 2-1/2 inches thick and requires a minimum 4 inch stile. On a narrower stile, look at narrow stile surface vertical rod devices such as the Adams Rite 8200 Series, the Corbin Russwin ED4400 or the crossbar ED7400, the Falcon 19-V-EO or 24-V-EO, the Von Duprin 3327A, 7527 or 7827, or the TownSteel ED3727. If the opening is also labeled, the Arrow S1150 is a fire rated device listed for narrow or wide stile doors.
6) What other fire rated surface vertical rod exit devices can replace a Design Hardware F2000V on a labeled opening?
Fire rated surface vertical rod devices that serve the same labeled application include the Adams Rite 3100 Series, a Grade 1 fire rated surface vertical rod device for 1-3/4 inch wide stile doors; the Arrow S1150, a fire rated exit-only device that fits narrow or wide stile doors; and the TownSteel 9700 Series EF9727, a heavy duty Grade 1 fire rated device for 36 by 84 inch wide stile openings that is also wood door compatible. The F2000V itself meets ANSI A156.3 Grade 1 and is UL listed for panic exit hardware, with fire door coverage to 8 ft by 10 ft and less bottom rod applications to 8 ft by 8 ft.
7) Which surface vertical rod exit devices look like substitutes for the F2000V but cannot be used on a fire rated pair?
Several common surface vertical rod devices are life-safety or panic only and are listed as not fire rated, so they are not drop-in equivalents where a label is required: the Adams Rite 8100 Series and narrow stile 8200 Series, the Von Duprin 2227 wide stile and 3327A narrow stile, the Corbin Russwin ED4400, ED5400 and ED7400, the Falcon 20 and 25 Series, the BEST Precision 2201 and 5201, and the Orca OED56. The Design Hardware F2000V is fire rated and includes thru bolts as part of its fastener package.
8) I only need the inactive leaf of a pair to look like it has an exit device. Is the F2000V the right part?
No. The Design Hardware F2000V is a functioning fire rated surface vertical rod exit device with a U shaped top latch and a drop bolt bottom latch that secures into a flat strike and a hole in the floor. For an inactive leaf that only needs matching appearance, the Sargent 12-8710 is a Grade 1 fire rated wide stile surface vertical rod device in a dummy function.
9) I have a 4 foot wide door. Do the comparable vertical rod devices cover that width like the 42 inch Design Hardware F2000V?
The 42 inch Design Hardware F2000V covers doors 3 ft 8 in to 4 ft 0 in wide and can be cut down to fit a 3 ft 4 in door, with the 33 inch size covering 3 ft 0 in doors. Most of the comparable surface vertical rod devices are cataloged at shorter lengths for 3 foot openings, including the Von Duprin 2227 at 36 inches for 36 inch doors, the Corbin Russwin ED5400 at 36 inches, the BEST Precision 2201 at 36 inches, the TownSteel EF9727 at 36 by 84 inches, and the Adams Rite 3100 and Arrow S1150 at 30 inches.
10) Does this exit device need to be ordered handed?
No. The 2000V ships right hand reverse and is re-handed in the field, so one part number covers both leaves of a pair.
11) What clearance does the F2000V push bar project off the door face?
Projection is 2-1/2 inches with the push bar neutral and undogged, dropping to 1-13/16 inches when dogged with the bar depressed. Use the 2-1/2 inch figure when checking clearance to adjacent walls, door swings, or a stairwell landing.
12) Can I hold this door unlatched during business hours?
Yes, dogging is standard on the panic version and uses a 5/32 inch hex key. Note that dogging is only legal on the non-fire application; a fire rated opening must latch on every close, so the fire-labeled configuration cannot be dogged.
13) Is this device ADA compliant for a lever handle opening?
With lever trim the 2000V meets ADA requirements under ANSI A117.1. The exterior lever trim is a separate order, so specify it if you need the ADA-compliant operable side.
14) What comes in the box, and what do I still have to buy?
The F2000V ships with wood, machine and self tapping machine screws plus thru bolts, and a latch filler. Exterior trim, shim kits, and the ALK-2000 exit alarm kit are separate items. Extended top rods are also an add-on for doors over 7 feet.
15) My installer wants a non-handed vertical rod device instead of the F2000V. What are the options?
The Design Hardware F2000V ships right hand reverse and is easily re-handed in the field. If you would rather not re-hand anything, the Von Duprin 2227 is a non-handed wide stile device, the Orca OED56 is non-handed and supplied less bottom rod, and the BEST Precision 5201 and Sargent 2727 are reversible surface vertical rod devices, the 2727 being Grade 1 fire rated.
16) The opening is a wood door. Which vertical rod exit devices are listed for wood doors as an alternative to the F2000V?
Among surface vertical rod devices, the TownSteel 9700 Series EF9727, the TownSteel ED3727 narrow stile and the TownSteel ED8927 wide stile are all listed as wood door compatible, with the EF9727 being the fire rated one of the three. By contrast, the Von Duprin 7527 and 7827 are listed as not wood door compatible. The Design Hardware F2000V ships with wood, machine and self tapping machine screws and includes thru bolts.
17) Which alternatives to the F2000V are exit only and will not take outside lever trim?
The Design Hardware F2000V meets ADA requirements under ANSI A117.1 when used with lever trim, and exterior trims are offered for it. If you want an exit only device with no outside operation, the Arrow 3700 Series, the Arrow S1150, the Falcon 19-V-EO, 24-V-EO and 25-V-EO, the Orca OED56, the Sargent 2727 and the Sargent 3727 are all listed as exit only. The Corbin Russwin ED4400 and ED5400 are exit only but accept trim, and the ED7400 accepts operator trim.
18) What finishes does the F2000V come in?
Four: 628 anodized aluminum, 613 dark bronze, gold painted, and 630 satin stainless steel (US32D). All four are offered in the 42 inch length.
19) Will the latch hold the door secure against being pulled open?
The 2000V uses a deadlocking latch, so the top latch cannot be forced back once engaged in the strike, and the U-shaped top latch geometry keeps it seated. The bottom drop bolt adds a second point into the floor.
20) Can I add an alarm to F2000V devices already installed on my doors?
Yes. The ALK-2000 exit alarm kit fits new or existing 2000 Series devices, so you can standardize alarmed exits across a building without replacing the hardware.
21) Which vertical rod devices besides the Design Hardware F2000V offer hex key dogging?
The Design Hardware F2000V comes standard with 5/32 inch hex key dogging on panic exit hardware. Among the comparable surface vertical rod devices, the Von Duprin 7827 is listed as a 3 ft wide pushbar Grade 1 device with hex key dogging. Note that dogging is a panic-only feature; on a labeled fire opening the F2000V is supplied fire rated and dogging is not applicable.
