1) Does the night latch pull trim come with a cylinder?
No cylinder is included. The 03-NL night latch function needs a rim cylinder, bought separately, and the trim ships with a cylinder sleeve so it installs into a 161 door prep. If you run small format interchangeable core, a rim cylinder housing for 6 or 7 pin SFIC (less core) is also available.
2) Will this trim cover an existing 161 door prep?
Yes. Both the pull plate and the mounting are made to cover a 161 (cylindrical lock) door prep, and the 03-NL version includes a cylinder sleeve so a rim cylinder mounts correctly in that prep. That makes it a straightforward swap on a door that previously had a cylindrical lockset.
3) Can I use this pull trim on a surface vertical rod exit device?
Not recommended. On an SVR device the key has to lift the rods, and the rim cylinder tailpiece makes that hard, so the retraction feels heavy or fails. Keep this trim on rim devices, the 1000R and 2000R. For a keyed SVR application, a trim built for vertical rod devices, such as the Sargent 744 freewheeling night latch trim for 8700/8900 surface vertical rod and mortise devices, is the right direction.
4) What should I use instead of the Design Hardware 03NL pull trim on a surface vertical rod exit device?
The Design Hardware pull trim is not recommended for SVR devices, since the rods can be hard to lift with a rim cylinder tailpiece. For an SVR opening, the Sargent 744 is a Grade 1 night latch trim listed for surface vertical rod and mortise 8700 and 8900 Series devices with a freewheeling lever that retracts the latch by key. The Dormakaba PowerPlex P201U is listed for rim, mortise and SVR devices.
5) What is the closest equivalent to the Design Hardware 03NL pull trim if the door needs a pull-style night latch trim rather than a lever?
The Tell EDPT exit device pull trim is also a pull trim with a cylinder hole supplied less cylinder, and it is listed for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thick. The Design Hardware 03-NL pull trim is built for 1-3/4 inch doors, is non-handed, and its 03-NL night latch function retracts the latch by key, with a rim cylinder required and not included. The Dexter ED1500 nightlatch trim with raised lip pull plate is another pull-plate nightlatch option, in Grade 1.
6) Do I need to order this pull trim left or right hand?
No handing to specify. The pull trim is non-handed, so one part works on either swing. Keying is the only choice on the order: keyed different as standard, or keyed alike if you're matching multiple openings.
7) What is the difference between the 03-NL and 02DT versions of this trim?
02DT is a dummy: the pull is fixed, there is no key control, and it's purely a grab handle for exit-only doors. 03-NL is night latch, where a key retracts the latch so you can get back in through the device. If nobody ever needs keyed re-entry, the dummy is the simpler order.
8) How far does this pull stick out from the door, and how much plate does it cover?
The pull plate measures 3 inches wide by 13-7/8 inches high and 1/16 inch thick. The pull itself is 3/4 inch diameter hollow tube with a 2-7/16 inch projection off the face. Worth checking that projection against anything swinging past the door, like an adjacent door or a wall return.
9) What fasteners come with this exit device pull trim, and do I need anything else?
The kit includes thru bolt posts, 1/4-20 machine screws and a finish washer, so the mounting hardware is covered. What you still have to buy is a rim cylinder for the 03-NL night latch function, plus the 1000R or 2000R exit device itself if it isn't already on the door.
10) Is this pull trim heavy enough for a high traffic commercial entrance?
It's stainless steel construction, Grade 1, and thru bolted through the door into the head of the exit device rather than screwed to the face, which is what holds up under pulling traffic. It's a commercial trim, not residential.
11) I need a night latch trim but with a lever instead of a pull. What are my options?
This Design Hardware trim is a pull, not a lever, so on a door where code or preference calls for a lever you want a lever night latch escutcheon instead. It is a different mode of operation. The Design Hardware 03-NL uses a fixed pull with a rim cylinder, so the key retracts the latch and there is no outside handle motion.
