Detex 0000-36 628 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is a dummy exit device actually for, and will the Detex Advantex 00 Series latch the door?
The Advantex 00 Series is a dummy device, so it does not latch anything and it does not operate. There are no moving parts in it. It mounts on the inactive leaf of a pair, or on a door where you want the same push bar look as the adjacent openings without any exit function. If the door has to release for egress, you need a functioning panic device instead, not this one.
2) I need a working panic device for an egress door, not a dummy. What should I order instead?
For an opening that has to release under panic pressure, go with a real rim device. The Von Duprin 22-3FT is a Grade 1 wide stile pushpad rim device for a 36 inch door, and the Corbin Russwin ED5200 is a Grade 1 wide stile 36 inch rim device that also accepts outside trim. For a 48 inch leaf, the Sargent 3828 is a Grade 1 reversible wide stile push bar device. The Advantex 00 dummy is only for the leaf that stays inactive.
3) Which door widths does the Detex Advantex dummy push bar come in?
Two lengths: 36 inch and 48 inch, both offered in every finish. Pick the length that matches the leaf width so the bar lines up visually with the working device on the active leaf.
4) The Detex Advantex 00 Series is wide stile. What should I use on a narrow stile aluminum storefront door?
Wide stile devices need the rail width of a hollow metal or wide stile door. For a narrow stile aluminum door, the Adams Rite 8800 Series 30 inch narrow stile rim device covers 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/4 inch doors, the Corbin Russwin ED4200 is a 36 inch Grade 1 narrow stile rim device on 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Falcon 19-R is a 36 inch Grade 1 narrow stile exit only device on 1-3/4 inch doors. All three are active devices rather than dummy trim.
5) Can a Detex Advantex 00 Series dummy device go on a fire rated opening?
The Advantex 00 Series is a dummy device with no moving parts and no fire rating stated. Where the opening carries a fire label, specify a device listed for it: the Marks USA M9900F is offered fire rated in 36 inch and 48 inch exit only, the Adams Rite 3700 Series 30 inch is a fire rated Grade 1 narrow stile rim device that is wood door compatible, and the Dexter ED1000-R-F-EO is a Grade 1 fire rated rim device.
6) What is the closest alternative to a Detex Advantex 00 Series dummy exit device if the opening needs a working panic device instead?
The Advantex 00 Series is a dummy function device with no moving parts, so it cannot latch or release an opening. If the door is an egress door that must operate, a wide stile rim panic device is the substitution: the Von Duprin 22-3FT is a 36 inch non-handed wide stile pushpad rim exit device rated Grade 1, and the Corbin Russwin ED2200 is a 36 inch Grade 1 wide stile rim device in exit only function. Both are active devices on 1-3/4 inch doors in the Von Duprin case.
7) Is there another dummy function rim exit device besides the Detex Advantex 00 Series?
Yes. The Sargent 12-8810-LTRIM is also catalogued in dummy function, in the 8800 Series wide stile rim family, and it is fire rated and Grade 1 with RX and MELR electrical options. The Detex Advantex 00 Series is Grade 1 wide stile as well but is a non-electrified device with no moving parts, so the Sargent is the one to look at when the inactive leaf still needs monitoring or electrical functions.
8) What end caps come with the Detex Advantex 00 dummy device, and do I have to pick one?
Two standard Advantex end caps are included. The style follows the finish you choose: flush end caps (EC2) are standard on 628, 693 and 695, and ramped heavy duty end caps (EC1) are standard on 630, 606, 612, 613, 605, 611 and 629. So the finish selection settles the end cap for you.
9) What finishes is the Detex Advantex 00 dummy bar available in?
Nine: 605 polished brass, 606 brushed brass, 611 polished bronze, 612 brushed bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 628 brushed aluminum, 629 bright stainless, 630 brushed stainless and 693 black painted. All nine are offered in both the 36 inch and 48 inch length, which matters when you are matching the dummy leaf to the active device across a building.
10) Is the Detex 00 Series dummy device rated for high traffic commercial use?
It carries a BHMA Grade 1 rating and is classified for commercial use. Since it is a dummy with no mechanism, wear is limited to the push bar surface and mounting, which is why it is used on doors that get pushed on constantly but never need to unlatch.
11) Can I key this Detex dummy device or add outside trim with a cylinder?
No cylinder, no keying. The 00 Series is non-keyed and has no latch to retract, so outside key trim serves no purpose on it. If the opening needs key access from outside, use a rim device that accepts trim, such as the Corbin Russwin ED5200 or ED4200.
12) Is there a Sargent equivalent to the Detex Advantex dummy exit device?
Yes. The Sargent 12-8810-LTRIM is an 8800 Series wide stile rim device listed with a dummy function, fire rated, and it comes with L trim plus request-to-exit and motor electric latch retraction features. The Detex Advantex 00 is the plain mechanical route: wide stile, Grade 1, no electrics, no trim, no moving parts.
13) I need the same look as a Detex Advantex 00 Series but on a 48 inch door that actually opens. What matches?
For a 48 inch leaf with a working device, the Sargent 2828 and Sargent 3828 are Grade 1 reversible wide stile rim devices built for 48 inch doors in exit only function, the Dormakaba DORMA 9300 Series is a 48 inch heavy duty Grade 1 wide stile rim device covering 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/4 inch doors, and the Corbin Russwin ED3200 is a 48 inch Grade 1 wide stile crossbar rim device on 1-3/4 inch doors. The Advantex 00 Series is offered in a 48 inch size as well, but as an inactive dummy.
14) What looks like a substitute for a Detex Advantex 00 Series push bar but is not?
Electrified bars read the same on a door elevation and are not interchangeable with a dummy. The SDC MSB550 is a 36 inch mechanical switch bar that releases an electromagnetic lock, the SDC SureExit PSB560 is a 36 inch pressure sense bar with tri-failsafe technology, and the Securitron EMB is an electromechanical exit bar for 2-1/4 inch doors. All three require power and switching, while the Advantex 00 Series is a non-keyed dummy with no moving parts.
15) What is the difference between the Detex Advantex 00 Series and a TownSteel ED9700 for a 36 inch commercial door?
Both are wide stile rim devices for a 36 inch door. The TownSteel ED9700 Series is a heavy duty Grade 1 operating rim exit device, non fire rated, while the Detex Advantex 00 Series at 36 inches is a Grade 1 dummy with no moving parts and no keying, used where the push bar appearance is wanted without a working latch. The TownSteel ED1100 is the comparable wide stile choice in TownSteel's 1000 Series.
16) Can the Detex Advantex 00 dummy device go on an exterior door exposed to weather?
It is not a weatherized device, so it is intended for interior or protected openings rather than direct exposure. For exterior pairs, plan on a weatherized or otherwise exterior-rated device on both leaves.
17) Does the Detex Advantex 00 dummy device need handing?
Handing is not a factor on it. With no latch mechanism or cam, the bar mounts to the door face and reads the same either way, which is why a single part number covers both leaves of a pair in a given length and finish.
18) Is there a lighter duty wide stile rim device than the Detex Advantex 00 Series for a low traffic opening?
The Advantex 00 Series is a super-heavy-duty Grade 1 wide stile device. For lighter service, the Design Hardware 2000R is a 33 inch standard duty wide stile rim device with hex key dogging, the Hager 4701 Series 36 inch is a standard duty rim device with Grade 1 BHMA certification, and the Cal-Royal 5000 is a 36 inch heavy duty rim device with a Grade 2 chassis. Note these are operating devices, not dummies.
19) We want a crossbar or paddle appearance instead of the push pad style of the Detex Advantex 00 Series. What else is available?
The Advantex 00 Series uses a push bar style. For a crossbar look, the CRL Jackson 1095 Series is a 48 inch crossbar rim panic device in wide stile, exit only, and the Corbin Russwin ED3200 is a 48 inch Grade 1 wide stile crossbar rim device. For a paddle, the CRL Jackson 1095P Series is a paddle rim panic device, also wide stile exit only.
