Don-Jo 12-10B-CW – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Don-Jo 12-CW wrap around plate fit my door and lockset?
Three numbers have to line up, and the 12-CW states all three. It is made for a 1-3/4 inch thick door, a 2-1/8 inch cross bore, and a 2-3/4 inch backset from the door edge to the center of that bore. If your door and lock match on all three, the plate goes on and the lockset reinstalls through it. Miss on any one and the hole will not line up with your lock. The plate covers a 5-1/8 by 12 inch area and has a latch prep indent so it clears the latch face on the edge of the door.
2) My lock has a 2-3/8 inch backset. Can I still use the 12-CW wrap plate?
No. The 12-CW is punched for a 2-3/4 inch backset, so the 2-1/8 inch hole sits 3/8 of an inch further from the door edge than your lock does. Force it on and the knob or lever body will not center in the opening. You need a wrap around plate cut for the 2-3/8 inch backset instead. Both backsets are common on cylindrical locks, so measure from the edge of the door to the center of the existing bore before you order.
3) Can I put the Don-Jo 12-CW on a 1-3/8 inch interior or residential door?
No. The 12-CW is built for 1-3/4 inch doors only, which is the standard commercial thickness. On a 1-3/8 inch door the wrap will be loose over the edge and will not sit flat on the second face. For thinner doors you need a wrap around sized for that thickness, not this one.
4) Does the Don-Jo 12-CW work with a mortise lock or a deadbolt?
It is cut for a cylindrical lock, not a mortise lock. The opening is a 2-1/8 inch cross bore at a 2-3/4 inch backset, which is the standard knob or lever prep. A mortise lock sits in a pocket in the edge of the door with a face plate and separate cylinder and handle holes, so none of it lines up with a single 2-1/8 inch hole. A deadbolt also uses its own bore, usually above the lock, and the 12-CW has one opening only.
5) Will adding a wrap around plate keep my lockset from going back together?
The 12-CW is 22-gauge steel, .032 inch thick, so it adds roughly a thirty-second of an inch at the lock face. On a standard cylindrical lockset that is inside the adjustment range of the through bolts and spindle, and the lock reassembles normally over the plate. Where it can matter is if the lock is already at the top of its thickness range or the screws are short, in which case a slightly longer set of through bolts sorts it out.
6) What finishes does the Don-Jo 12-CW wrap plate come in, and will it match the levers already on my doors?
Three finishes, and each one carries a BHMA number so you can match it to hardware already in the building: 10B oil rubbed bronze (613), PB polished brass (605), and S satin stainless (630). If your existing levers are marked 626 satin chrome, the 630 satin stainless is the closest of the three in tone, though it is a stainless finish rather than a plated chrome one. Matching by the number rather than by eye is the reliable way to do it across a set of openings.
7) Wrap around plate or filler plate: which one do I need for a beat up lock area?
It depends on whether a lock is going back in the hole. A wrap around like the 12-CW is for a door that keeps its cylindrical lockset, it surrounds the working lock with a 5-1/8 by 12 inch steel plate and a 2-1/8 inch opening at a 2-3/4 inch backset so the lock reinstalls through it. A filler or blank plate is for a door where the hardware is coming out and the hole needs to be closed off. If you are replacing a lock on a damaged 1-3/4 inch door, the wrap is the part. If the opening is being converted to a push or pull door with no lock, it is not.
8) Do I have to remove the lock to install a Don-Jo wrap around plate?
Yes, the lockset comes off first. A wrap around slides onto the lock edge of the door and folds over both faces, so it cannot pass over an installed knob or lever. Pull the trim and the latch, set the plate so the 2-1/8 inch hole lines up with the bore and the latch prep indent sits over the latch mortise on the edge, then reinstall the latch and lock through it. On a door with a working lock this is usually a short job, but it is not a stick-on plate.
9) Is a 22-gauge wrap around plate strong enough to secure a door against forced entry?
Think of the 12-CW as a cover and a stiffener, not a security upgrade. At 22 gauge (.032 inch) the steel spreads load around the bore and hides damaged prep on a 1-3/4 inch commercial door, which is what keeps a worn opening in service in an office, school, or multi-tenant building. If the door has actually been kicked and the latch has torn through the edge, the strike side of the frame and a heavier reinforcement are what need attention, not a wrap of this gauge.
