1) My cylindrical lock has a 2-3/8 inch backset. Is the 55A-CW the right wrap around?
No. The bore in the 55A-CW is positioned for a 2-3/4 inch backset. Fitting a 2-3/8 inch backset lock through it would pull the latch tube out of line with the edge bore and the strike. 2-3/8 and 2-3/4 inches are the two standard cylindrical backsets, so check the measurement from the door edge to the center of the knob hole before ordering.
2) Will the Don-Jo 55A-CW wrap around fit a 1-3/8 inch door?
No. The 55A-CW is formed for 1-3/4 inch thick doors only. A wrap around plate has to match door thickness because it bends over the edge of the door and seats against both faces; on a 1-3/8 inch door it will stand off and the bore will not line up. For a 1-3/8 inch leaf you need a wrap around built for that thickness.
3) What size hole does the Don-Jo 55A-CW wrap around plate have, and will a standard commercial knob or lever go through it?
The bore is 2-1/8 inches, which is the standard cross bore for commercial cylindrical knob and lever sets, so a normal Grade 1 or Grade 2 cylindrical lock passes straight through. The plate also has a latch prep indent so it sits flat against the door edge over the existing latch face.
4) I have damaged and oversized lock holes on a metal commercial door. Should I replace the door or use a wrap around plate?
A wrap around like the 55A-CW is the standard repair when the door is sound but the lock prep is chewed up or the wrong size. It wraps the edge of a 1-3/4 inch door and covers 6-1/2 x 9 inches of face on each side, so old fasteners, screw pulls and the oversized 5 inch backset prep disappear under 22-gauge (.032) steel. Replacing the leaf only makes sense if the door itself is failing.
5) Does the Don-Jo 55A-CW wrap around plate work on a door with a mortise lock?
No. The 55A-CW is cut for a 2-1/8 inch cylindrical bore at a 2-3/4 inch backset. A mortise lock uses a pocket in the door edge with separate cylinder and trim holes, and this plate has no prep for that. Use it when you are going to, or already have, a cylindrical knob or lever set.
