DORMA 711F Series

700 Series - Standard duty stops/holders

900 Series - Heavy duty stops/holders

Functions

S - Stop Only
F - Friction Stop
H - Stop/Hold

Stop only units (S function) are designed to limit the degree of door swing while providing a cushioned stop. These units are a good choice for use on labeled fire doors where hold open is prohibited.

Stop/Hold units (H function) function like stop only units with an added selective on/off hold open feature. An inconspicuous slot screw on the face of the track channel allows field engagement/disengagement of hold open. Stop/hold is recommended where non-labeled doors must be held in the open position.

Friction/Stop (F function) units provide a cushioned limiting stop and adjustable friction stay. The accessible screw on top of the slide shoe allows field adjustment of the friction. This option provides a method of holding non- labeled doors at multiple positions without readjustment. Available in 700/710 Series only.

Product details

Durable and visually pleasing

Separate stops and holders are the preferred method of limiting door swing. They are ideal where the use of wall or floor stops is precluded. The 700/900 Series high quality units are both durable and visually pleasing.

Highest quality materials

DORMA stops and holders are designed and manufactured from the highest quality materials to provide optimum service under heavy-duty use.

Different finishes available

A standard two-coat paint finish is the best choice to match sprayed DORMA door closers. Optional plated finishes are also available.

Several unit types available

Dormakaba 711F 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is the difference between a friction stop and a stop/hold overhead unit?
A stop/hold (H function) latches the door at one preset hold-open point, switched on or off in the field with a slot screw on the face of the track channel. The 711F friction stop (F function) instead uses an adjustable friction stay, set by a screw on top of the slide shoe, so the door stays wherever you push it rather than at one fixed angle. Pick friction when staff want the door parked at varying openings; pick H when you want one repeatable hold position.
2) Is this a surface mount or concealed overhead stop, and when should I use concealed?
The 711F is a concealed mount unit, so the track mortises into the top edge of the door and the arm anchors to the frame soffit, leaving almost nothing visible when the door is closed. That means the door has to be prepped for the mortise, which is easy on new work and harder on an existing door. If you cannot mortise, use a surface overhead stop such as the Glynn-Johnson 70 Series or the Norton Rixson 10 Series.
3) I need a concealed overhead stop on a labeled fire door - is the 711F the right pick?
No. The F in DORMA 711F stands for friction stop, which provides a cushioned limiting stop plus an adjustable friction stay that holds a door at multiple positions. DORMA restricts hold-open behavior to non-labeled doors and recommends stop only units on labeled fire doors. Within the same DORMA 700 Series the S function is stop only. Concealed alternatives built around a stop function include the ABH 1000 Series heavy-duty concealed mount overhead door stop with fire rating, and the Norton Rixson 10-336 standard duty overhead stop, which is Grade 1.
4) What is a heavy duty concealed overhead stop alternative to the DORMA 711F for a high-traffic opening?
The DORMA 711F is a standard duty concealed unit from the 700 Series, which DORMA positions as its standard duty stop/holder line against the 900 Series heavy duty line. If the opening sees abuse or heavy traffic, heavy duty concealed mount alternatives include the Glynn-Johnson 100 Series, the Norton Rixson 1 Series Checkmate concealed stop and holder rated Grade 1 with a 110 degree opening, the Sargent 690 heavy duty overhead concealed stop/holder with ANSI Grade 1 compliance, and the ABH 1000 Series heavy-duty concealed mount overhead door stop. All mount concealed in the door like the 711F, so the prep concept is familiar, but they are built for heavier service.
5) What is the closest standard duty concealed overhead stop to the DORMA 711F from another brand?
For a like-for-like standard duty concealed unit, the Don-Jo 3023 and Don-Jo 3024 are standard duty concealed overhead door stops in satin stainless steel, sized for 30 inch and 36 inch doors respectively. The Sargent 1530 is a concealed mount stop/holder with a 110 degree opening, and the Glynn-Johnson 410 Series is a medium duty concealed overhead holder and stop. The difference to weigh is function: the DORMA 711F is the friction variant with a field-adjustable friction stay set by a screw on top of the slide shoe, so if you need holding at multiple positions rather than a fixed hold-open point, that is the distinguishing feature.
6) The door has no room for a concealed stop prep - what surface mounted unit can I use instead of the DORMA 711F?
The DORMA 711F is a concealed mount overhead stop, which requires mortising into the door top. Where that prep is not possible, surface applied overhead units include the Glynn-Johnson 70 Series heavy duty surface overhead holder and stop with an 85 to 110 degree hold-open range, the Glynn-Johnson 79 Series extra heavy duty surface unit, and the Norton Rixson 10 Series Checkmate surface stop and holder, offered as the 10-236 with an adjustable hold-open feature and the 10-346. Surface units mount to the face of the door and the frame soffit, so they are visible but need no routing.
7) I need to hold doors open at several different angles without resetting anything. Which overhead stop does that?
That is exactly what the friction function does, and DORMA offers it only in the 700/710 Series, which is where the 711F lives. The friction stay is field adjustable at the slide shoe, so once tension is set the door will stay at any position along the swing. Hold-open units from other lines give you fixed positions instead.
8) What finishes does the DORMA 711F come in, and which one matches my door closers?
Fifteen finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 and 696 satin brass, 611 bright bronze, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 618 bright nickel, 619 satin nickel, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 689 aluminum painted, 690 and 695 dark bronze, 691 light bronze, and 693 black painted. DORMA calls the two-coat painted finishes the best match for sprayed DORMA closers, so 689, 690, 693 and the bronzes are the ones to pick when you are matching closers rather than lever trim.
9) Which concealed overhead stops let me adjust the opening angle in the field the way the DORMA 711F lets me adjust friction?
The DORMA 711F adjustment is friction only - a screw on top of the slide shoe sets how firmly the door stays where you put it, while the stop limits the swing. If what you need instead is a field-settable opening angle, the ABH 1000A Series concealed mount stop and holder has field-adjustable opening control, and the ABH 1000RA and 1000SA Series concealed stop and holders offer adjustable opening control as well. The Norton Rixson 10-336 is a standard duty overhead stop with adjustable opening control. Those change where the door stops; the 711F changes how hard it holds.
10) Is the Glynn-Johnson 410 a direct swap for the DORMA 711F?
Not a direct swap. Both are concealed overhead units, but the Glynn-Johnson 410 Series is medium duty while the DORMA 711F is a standard duty unit from DORMA's 700 Series standard duty stop/holder line. More importantly, the 711F is the F function - a cushioned limiting stop with an adjustable friction stay, which DORMA offers only in the 700 and 710 Series. Concealed overhead stops are cut into the door top with brand-specific templates and channel lengths, so treat any change of brand as a new prep and verify the template against the existing mortise before ordering.
