DORMA 711S Series

700 Series - Standard duty stops/holders

900 Series - Heavy duty stops/holders

Functions

S - Stop Only
F - Friction Stop
H - Stop/Hold

Stop only units (S function) are designed to limit the degree of door swing while providing a cushioned stop. These units are a good choice for use on labeled fire doors where hold open is prohibited.

Stop/Hold units (H function) function like stop only units with an added selective on/off hold open feature. An inconspicuous slot screw on the face of the track channel allows field engagement/disengagement of hold open. Stop/hold is recommended where non-labeled doors must be held in the open position.

Friction/Stop (F function) units provide a cushioned limiting stop and adjustable friction stay. The accessible screw on top of the slide shoe allows field adjustment of the friction. This option provides a method of holding non- labeled doors at multiple positions without readjustment. Available in 700/710 Series only.

Product details

Durable and visually pleasing

Separate stops and holders are the preferred method of limiting door swing. They are ideal where the use of wall or floor stops is precluded. The 700/900 Series high quality units are both durable and visually pleasing.

Highest quality materials

DORMA stops and holders are designed and manufactured from the highest quality materials to provide optimum service under heavy-duty use.

Different finishes available

A standard two-coat paint finish is the best choice to match sprayed DORMA door closers. Optional plated finishes are also available.

Dormakaba 711S 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is a concealed overhead stop better than a wall stop or floor stop?
An overhead stop is what you use when a wall or floor stop is not an option, which is the usual case in corridors, glass fronts, and anywhere a floor stop is a trip hazard or the wall behind the door is glazing or millwork. DORMA's own position is that separate stops and holders are the preferred method of limiting door swing and are made for openings where wall or floor stops are precluded. Concealed mount like the 711S hides the mechanism in the door top and frame head, so nothing shows when the door is closed.
2) Which overhead stop is the right substitute for a DORMA 711S on a labeled fire door?
The 711S S function is a stop only unit, described by the manufacturer as a good choice on labeled fire doors because hold open is prohibited there. The ABH 1000 Series is a heavy duty concealed mount overhead door stop with a fire rating, and it is a stop rather than a stop and holder, unlike the ABH 1000A, 1000RA and 1000SA Series in the same family which add opening control for hold open. When replacing a 711S on a fire rated opening, stay with a stop function unit and confirm the fire label requirements for the specific door assembly.
3) The DORMA 711S is not rated heavy enough for a high traffic entrance. What concealed overhead stop should be used instead?
The DORMA 711S is a standard duty unit from the DORMA 700 Series, which the manufacturer designates as its standard duty stop and holder line, with the 900 Series as the heavy duty line. For a heavier opening, the Glynn-Johnson 100 Series is a heavy duty concealed overhead holder and stop, non-handed and commercial grade. The Norton Rixson 1 Series Checkmate is a heavy duty concealed stop and holder rated Grade 1 with a 110 degree opening. The Sargent 690 is a heavy duty overhead concealed stop and holder with ANSI Grade 1 compliance. The ABH 1000 Series is a heavy duty concealed mount overhead door stop with a fire rating.
4) Which overhead stop should be used instead of the DORMA 711S when the door has to hold open?
The 711S is the S function, stop only, which limits swing with a cushioned stop and has no hold open feature. In the DORMA 700 Series the H function adds a selective on/off hold open engaged by a slot screw on the face of the track channel, and the F function adds an adjustable friction stay for holding non-labeled doors at multiple positions. Across other brands, the ABH 1000A, 1000RA and 1000SA Series are heavy duty concealed mount stops and holders with adjustable opening control, the Sargent 1530 is a concealed mount stop/holder with a 110 degree opening, and the Glynn-Johnson 410 Series is a medium duty concealed overhead holder and stop. Hold open is prohibited on labeled fire doors, so the S function remains the correct choice there.
5) Can I get the DORMA 711S to match my existing door closers and lever finishes?
Fifteen finishes are offered: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 611 bright bronze, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 618 bright nickel, 619 satin nickel, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 689 aluminum painted, 690 dark bronze, 691 light bronze, 693 black painted, 695 dark bronze, and 696 satin brass. The painted finishes are the two-coat paint DORMA calls the best match for its sprayed door closers, so 689 or 690 is the usual pick when the closer on the same opening is DORMA. The plated numbers (605, 626, 613 and the rest) are what you use to match lever and hinge hardware across a floor.
6) Do I still need a door closer if I install a DORMA 711S overhead stop?
Yes, they do different jobs. The 711S only limits how far the door swings open and cushions it at the end of travel; it does nothing to close the door or control closing speed. DORMA positions the 700 and 900 Series stops and holders as a complement to its door closer line to make a complete door control system, so on a self-closing or fire-rated opening you are ordering both the closer and the stop.
7) What is the difference between a concealed overhead stop and a surface mounted one?
A concealed unit like the 711S mortises into the top of the door and the frame head, so nothing is visible with the door shut and there is no hardware to catch or vandalize; it requires door and frame prep, which makes it the natural choice on new work or a door you are already machining. Surface overhead stops mount on the face of the door and the soffit and can be added to a hung door with no mortising. Surface options include the Glynn-Johnson 70 and 79 Series and the Norton Rixson 10 Series Checkmate.
8) Are the Glynn-Johnson 70 and 79 Series drop-in replacements for a DORMA 711S?
No. The DORMA 711S is a concealed mount unit, which means the arm and track are set into a mortise in the door top rail and the frame soffit. The Glynn-Johnson 70 Series is a heavy duty surface overhead holder and stop with an 85 to 110 degree hold-open range, and the 79 Series is an extra heavy duty surface overhead holder and stop. The Norton Rixson 10-236 and 10-346 Checkmate units are likewise surface stop and holder models, both medium duty with a stop function. Surface units mount on the face of the door and frame and need no mortise prep, so they solve a different opening than a concealed 711S and will not reuse its existing cutouts.
9) Is the DORMA 711S a commercial-rated stop or a residential one?
Commercial. The 711S is a commercial door control product, built for optimum service under heavy-duty use per DORMA, and it is the standard duty tier of that commercial line rather than a residential part.
10) Can I add friction hold to a DORMA 711S later?
Not on the 711S itself, but the friction stop function stays inside the same standard duty family. DORMA offers the F friction/stop unit in the 700 and 710 Series only, and it uses an accessible screw on top of the slide shoe to adjust the friction in the field so the door holds at multiple positions without readjustment. The 900 Series heavy duty line does not carry that function.
11) What is a simpler concealed overhead stop to specify when a whole building of standard interior doors needs swing control?
The DORMA 711S is a stop only unit with no hold open feature and no field adjustment to set, which makes it a single-decision part once the door opening range is chosen. The Don-Jo 3023 and 3024 are also standard duty concealed overhead door stops, supplied in satin stainless steel and sized for 30 inch and 36 inch doors. The Glynn-Johnson 410 Series is a medium duty concealed overhead holder and stop. Units with adjustable opening control, such as the ABH 1000A and 1000RA Series, add a field adjustment step at each opening that a plain stop only unit does not require.
