Dormakaba ES62F-FSV-630 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Dorma ES62F electric strike work with a rim exit device on a fire rated opening?
That's exactly what the ES62F is built for. It's a rim electric strike designed to operate with rim exit devices, and it carries a 3 hour fire rating. It's fail-secure, so the keeper stays locked when power drops and the door remains latched, which is what a fire door needs. Egress from the inside is still handled by the exit device itself, not the strike.
2) Do I have to cut the frame to install the ES62F strike?
No frame cutting. The ES62 rim strike is completely surface mounted, which is the main reason to pick it over a mortise or semi-mortise strike on an existing opening. That matters on retrofits where the frame is already finished, or on a fire rated frame you don't want to modify. It mounts to hollow metal, aluminum, and wood doors.
3) What latch throw does a rim exit device need for the ES62F strike to work?
The ES62F accepts a latch throw of 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch. Most rim exit device latchbolts fall in that window, but check the device you're pairing it with. If your latch projects further than 3/4 inch, this isn't the strike for that opening.
4) Can I get door position or latch status feedback from the ES62F?
Yes, if you order it with the latch monitor option. The ES62F is available with Latch Monitor (LM) or without it. If your access control panel needs to know the latch is secured, or you're logging forced or propped door events, specify the LM version at time of order. There is no field kit implied here, so pick it up front.
5) Will the ES62F strike hold the door locked if the building loses power?
Yes. It's fail-secure, meaning the keeper stays locked with no power applied and the door stays secured from the outside. If your code official or your fire plan requires the opening to unlock on power loss, a fail-secure strike is the wrong choice and you need a fail-safe device instead. On a rim exit device opening, free egress comes from the push bar regardless of strike state.
6) What is the difference between the Dorma ES62F and the RCI 0161 electric strike for rim exit devices?
Both work with rim exit devices, but they mount differently. The ES62F is a surface mount rim exit strike, so it sits on the face of the frame. The RCI 0161 is a semi-mortise strike, which requires frame prep to recess part of the body. The ES62F is non-handed, fail-secure, carries a 3 hour fire rating, and runs on 12/24 VAC/DC; the RCI 0161 is specified for 24VAC/DC operation. If the frame is aluminum storefront or an existing opening you do not want to cut, the surface mount ES62F is the one that fits the situation.
7) Can the RCI 0161 be used on a 3 hour fire rated opening in place of the Dorma ES62F?
The ES62F is the one to specify when the opening is fire rated. It carries a 3 hour fire rating and is built for rim exit devices on metal and wood doors, fail-secure, non-handed. The RCI 0161 is a semi-mortise electric strike for rim exit devices running 24VAC/DC. For a fire door assembly where the inspector will be reading the label, specify the ES62F.
8) Is the Dorma ES62F handed? Do I need to order left or right hand?
Non-handed. One part number covers both hands, so you don't specify handing when ordering and you can stock a single strike for a building with doors swinging both ways.
9) Is the ES62F strike strong enough for a high traffic commercial entrance?
It's a commercial-grade stainless steel strike with up to 1500 lb (680 kg) holding force, and the one piece conventional keeper design spreads load evenly under a forced entry attempt. UL/CUL listed. For apartment entries, school corridors, and similar traffic, that's the right class of strike.
10) What's the difference between a surface mount rim strike like the ES62F and a semi-mortise strike?
The ES62F mounts entirely on the surface of the frame, so nothing gets cut in. A semi-mortise strike, like the RCI 0161 for rim exit devices, is partly recessed into the frame, which gives a flatter look but means prep work. Pick the surface mount when the frame is finished, fire rated, or aluminum and you'd rather not cut it. Pick semi-mortise on new work or where the strike sitting proud of the frame is a problem.
11) Which Dorma ES strike should I use if I need anti-vibration or a heavier duty fire rated strike?
The ES62F handles standard fire rated rim exit device openings. If the concern is someone manipulating the strike by vibration, the Dorma ES72F uses an anti-vibration design. For heavier duty fire rated work, the ES74F has a saddle-mounted housing and a tamper-resistant guard. All three are Dorma ES Series strikes for the same general class of opening.
12) Can I use the Dorma ES62F on a wood door, or is it metal frame only?
Both. The ES62F accommodates hollow metal, aluminum, and wood doors, so it covers the mix you'd find across a multi-tenant or institutional building without switching part numbers per opening type.
13) Which rim exit strike needs less frame work on a retrofit, the Dorma ES62F or the RCI 0161?
The ES62F is completely surface mounted, which eliminates frame cutting, and it accommodates hollow metal, aluminum, and wood doors. The RCI 0161 is a semi-mortise strike, so the frame has to be prepped to receive it. For an occupied building where you are changing out hardware between tenants and cannot take a frame out of service for prep, the surface mount ES62F is the lighter install.
14) Both the Dorma ES62F and RCI 0161 say rim exit device. Are they interchangeable in the same frame prep?
They are not a drop-in swap for each other. Both are electric strikes intended for rim exit devices, but the ES62F is surface mounted to the frame face while the RCI 0161 is semi-mortise and sits partly into the frame. Pulling one out and putting the other in changes the frame prep, so plan the opening around whichever body style you standardize on. The ES62F is non-handed and takes a 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch latch throw.
15) What finish does the Dorma ES62F come in?
630 stainless steel, which is the standard satin stainless you'll see on commercial exit devices and door hardware, so it matches most rim device housings already on the opening.
