1) How heavy a door will the Dorma RTS08 concealed closer handle?
The RTS08 is rated for doors up to 250 lbs. That covers most aluminum storefront and entrance leaves. If your leaf is heavier than that, this is the wrong closer and you need a floor closer or a heavier-duty overhead concealed unit.
2) Does the Dorma RTS08 work on a center hung door, and is it handed?
It's a center hung, end load unit for aluminum door and frame applications, and it's non-handed, so one part number covers left and right openings. That matters if you're stocking spares for a building with swings in both directions. It will not work on an offset pivot opening; for offset hung aluminum doors look at the Norton Rixson 0608 Series instead.
3) Can the RTS08 be used on a double acting door that swings both ways?
Yes. The RTS08 is set up for single or double acting doors, so it will control a leaf that swings in and out, such as a vestibule or lobby door. The same closer handles a conventional single acting entrance too.
4) Which spring size do I order for a 3'-0" exterior aluminum entrance?
Spring size is an order choice on the RTS08. SZ3 is the standard closing force for 2'-6" to 3'-0" exterior doors and 3'-0" to 3'-6" interior doors. SZ4 is the strongest, for 3'-0" to 3'-6" exterior and 3'-6" to 4'-0" interior. SZ2 is a light opening force option. If the opening has to meet a reduced opening force requirement, BFE is the barrier free spring for a 3'-0" exterior door and BFI is the barrier free spring for a 3'-0" interior door.
5) What do I need to specify when ordering a Dorma RTS08 closer?
Four decisions. Spring size (SZ2, SZ3, SZ4, BFE or BFI). Cushion stop at 90 or 105 degrees, which sets how far the door swings before the closer cushions it. Hold open or non hold open. And the package: standard, with the 8563 frame cover plate added, or with a 5mm extended spindle for deeper header conditions. Finish is a separate selection and includes the 8653 cover frame.
6) My door is offset hung, not center hung. What overhead concealed closer should I use instead of the RTS08?
The RTS08 is a center hung end load unit, so it will not suit an offset hung opening. The Norton Rixson 0608 Series is an offset hung overhead concealed closer for aluminum doors up to 200 lbs, listed as standard duty. If the door exceeds that weight, an offset pivot application needs a heavier unit than the 0608.
7) I need the door to open a full 180 degrees - will the RTS08 do that?
The RTS08 is offered with a 90 degree or 105 degree cushion stop, so it is built around those swing limits. If the opening has to swing 180 degrees, the Sargent 269 is an overhead concealed closer with 180 degree opening capability, listed as heavy duty Grade 1.
8) What finishes does the Dorma RTS08 come in?
Seven, and the finish covers the 8653 cover frame as well as the unit: 600 prime coat, 689 aluminum, 690 statuary bronze, 691 dull bronze, 693 black, 695 dark duradonic bronze and 696 gold. For a building where you're matching existing storefront hardware, 689 aluminum and 693 black are the usual matches to clear and black anodized frames.
9) Should I use a concealed closer like the RTS08 or a surface applied closer?
Pick the concealed RTS88 unit when a surface closer would spoil the look of the opening or when the entrance keeps getting vandalized, since there's no body or arm exposed to be torn off. Surface closers are easier to adjust and swap later. One practical advantage on new work: most of the door and frame prep for the RTS08 is done before the unit goes in, so there's less machining on site.
10) Do I need the 8563 frame cover plate with the RTS08?
It's an ordering option, not standard. Choose the package with the 8563 frame cover plate when the header cutout needs to be closed off and finished; otherwise order standard. There's also a 5mm extended spindle package if the spindle has to reach further down to the top pivot.
11) What is the difference between the 90 degree and 105 degree cushion option?
The cushion setting is the point at which the closer takes over and cushions the door near full open. Order 90 degrees when a wall, sidelite or return blocks the leaf at square, and 105 degrees where the opening is clear and you want a wider swing for carts and deliveries. It's fixed by the part you order on the RTS08, so decide it against the site conditions before you buy.
12) Can I get the RTS08 with hold open?
Yes, hold open is an order option on the RTS08, and non hold open is the alternative. Hold open is useful for move-in or delivery doors; skip it on any opening that has to stay latched for security or where a fire door assembly is involved.
