DORMA RTS88 Series Overhead Concealed Door Closer

The RTS88 is designed to give lasting, dependable service where surface applied units and other types of closers are not suitable, or would interfere with the architectural design. It can be easily installed in wood, aluminum, or hollow metal doors and frames, for single and double-acting doors.

  • Concealed installation
  • For single and double-acting doors
  • Dependable and easy to Install

Aesthetic advantages

Architects are often challenged to design buildings that are both beautiful and functional, down to the last detail. The DORMA RTS88 overhead concealed door closer offers the perfect solution for those who prefer the aesthetic advantages of a concealed door closer.

Vandalism protection

The RTS88 is an excellent replacement closer for problem entrances encountering vandalism of surface applied closers.

Benefits for the contractor

Contractors appreciate the RTS88 closer, because the majority of door and frame preparation is done prior to installation of the unit, resulting in less on-site machining.

Dormakaba RTS21 105 NHO SZ3 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How heavy a door will the Dorma RTS21 concealed closer handle?
The RTS21 is rated for doors up to 250 lbs. That covers most aluminum entrance doors and heavier full-glass leaves. If your door is lighter and you only need a standard-duty unit, the Norton Rixson 608 Series center hung concealed closer is rated to 200 lbs, and the Norton Rixson 73 Series is another 250 lb center hung double acting option.
2) Is the Dorma RTS21 closer handed, and does it work on a double acting door?
Non-handed, so one unit covers left and right hand openings with no separate part to order. It works on single acting and double acting doors, which is why it suits center hung storefront pairs and vestibule doors that swing both ways.
3) Will the RTS21 fit my aluminum storefront door, or do I need a different version?
The RTS21 is the center hung end load configuration prepped for aluminum door and frame applications. The RTS88 body itself installs in wood, aluminum, or hollow metal, but the RTS21 package is set up for aluminum door and frame, so if your opening is a hollow metal frame or an offset hung door you want a different configuration in the series rather than this one.
4) What spring size should I order for a 3-foot exterior aluminum door?
Five spring sizes are offered. SZ3 is the standard closing force for 3'-0" to 3'-6" interior doors and 2'-6" to 3'-0" exterior doors, so a 3-foot exterior leaf lands on SZ3. SZ4 is the strongest, for 3'-6" to 4'-0" interior or 3'-0" to 3'-6" exterior doors. SZ2 is a light opening force. If you need reduced opening force for accessibility, BFE is the barrier free size for a 3'-0" exterior door and BFI is the barrier free size for a 3'-0" interior door.
5) I need the door to swing a full 180 degrees - does the RTS21 handle that, or is there a better closer?
The RTS21 is built around a cushion stop at either 90 or 105 degrees, so its swing is controlled to one of those two points. For an opening that has to reach a full 180 degrees, the Sargent 269 is an overhead concealed closer with 180 degree opening capability, heavy duty and Grade 1. The Sargent 268, also heavy duty Grade 1, uses a cast iron body if the priority is the closer body rather than the degree of opening.
6) Can I get the RTS21 with hold open, and what does the cushion degree mean?
Hold open is an option, so you can order the closer with or without it. Separately you choose the backcheck cushion point, either 90 degrees or 105 degrees. The cushion setting is where the closer starts cushioning the swing, so pick it based on how far the door can open before it hits an adjacent wall or sidelite.
7) What do I need to add to the RTS21 order to finish the install?
Three package options: standard, add the 8563 frame cover plate, or the version with the 5mm extended spindle. Take the cover plate when the header prep needs to be concealed on the frame face, and the extended spindle when the top rail or header depth needs the extra reach. Finish is selected with the 8653 cover frame included.
8) Should I use an overhead concealed closer or a surface closer on a vandalism-prone entrance?
Concealed is the better call where surface units get abused. The RTS88 mounts inside the header so there is no exposed body or arm to pry, break, or unscrew, and Dorma positions it specifically as a replacement for problem entrances where surface applied closers keep getting vandalized. It is also the choice when an exposed closer would clash with the architectural design. A surface closer stays easier to service and adjust without pulling the door.
9) What are the alternatives to the Dorma RTS21 if I need a Grade 1 concealed closer?
Among other brands of overhead concealed closers, the Sargent 268 is a heavy duty Grade 1 unit with a cast iron body, the Sargent 269 is Grade 1 with 180 degree opening capability, and the Sargent 278 is Grade 1 with an exposed arm. The Norton Rixson 73 Series is a heavy duty Grade 1 center hung double acting closer with a cover plate. For offset hung aluminum doors rather than center hung, the Norton Rixson 0608 Series is the standard duty offset option.
10) I only need to replace the closer body in an existing concealed header. Is the RTS21 the right buy?
The RTS21 ships as a closer package for center hung end load aluminum door and frame applications with finish cover frame, not as a bare body for someone else's prep. If you are replacing just the mechanism in an existing header, the CRL Jackson overhead concealed closer body only units are sold that way, including regular duty 90 degree and 105 degree no hold-open versions, a heavy duty 105 degree, and an adjustable spring power 105 degree body.
11) Is there a simpler concealed closer than the RTS21 if I only need a replacement body?
Yes. The CRL Jackson 20-101M-01 is a regular duty overhead concealed closer body only in brown with a 105 degree non hold open function, and the 20-101M-03 is the same body only unit in the 90 degree non hold open configuration. Those are bodies alone, without the finish and cover frame selection the RTS21 is ordered with, and they are fixed at one function rather than offering the RTS21 hold open and non hold open choice. If the existing cement case and cover are staying in the opening, a body only unit is the shorter path; if you are building the whole assembly, the RTS21 is ordered complete with a finish covering the 8653 cover frame.
12) Which of these concealed closers looks like a substitute for the RTS21 but is not fully concealed?
The Sargent 278 is an overhead concealed closer with an exposed arm, so the closer body is concealed in the head but the arm remains visible on the door. The RTS21 is chosen specifically where a fully concealed installation is wanted, described as the solution for those who prefer the aesthetic advantages of a concealed door closer and as a replacement where surface applied closers have been vandalized. If the reason for specifying concealed is appearance or vandal resistance, the exposed arm of the 278 changes that outcome even though both are heavy duty units.
13) Do I need the RTS21 spring size selection, or will an adjustable spring power closer cover the range?
The RTS21 is ordered with the spring size fixed at purchase: BFI and BFE for barrier free light opening force on 3 foot interior and exterior doors, SZ2 light opening force, SZ3 for 3 foot to 3 foot 6 interior and 2 foot 6 to 3 foot exterior doors, and SZ4 for 3 foot 6 to 4 foot interior and 3 foot to 3 foot 6 exterior doors. The CRL Jackson 20-101M-17 is an adjustable spring power overhead concealed closer body only in the 105 degree non hold open function, which sets power after the fact instead. Choose the RTS21 spring size route when the opening width and barrier free requirement are known at order time, and the adjustable unit when one body has to cover several openings.
14) What finishes does the RTS21 concealed closer come in?
Seven finishes, and the selection covers the 8653 cover frame that shows on the opening: 600 prime coat, 689 aluminum, 690 statuary bronze, 691 dull bronze, 693 black, 695 dark duradonic bronze, and 696 gold. For a building where the other entrances are clear anodized aluminum, 689 is the match; 600 prime coat is for field painting to a custom color.
15) How much on-site machining does an RTS88 concealed closer need?
Most of the door and frame preparation is done before the unit goes in, so there is less machining at the opening. On a new aluminum storefront that means the header comes prepped and the closer drops in. On a retrofit into an unprepped header, plan for that prep work up front.
16) What is the difference between the CRL Jackson regular duty and heavy duty concealed closer bodies when cross-shopping the RTS21?
Within the CRL Jackson body only units, the 20-101M-01 is the regular duty 105 degree non hold open body and the 20-101M-09 is the heavy duty body in the same 105 degree non hold open swing, so duty level is what separates them rather than function. Both are fixed non hold open. The RTS21 is offered either with or without hold open and with a 90 or 105 degree cushion, and is rated for 250 lb doors in single or double acting service.
17) Is the RTS21 suitable for a residential entry, or is it commercial only?
This is a commercial-duty closer, sized for 250 lb doors and specified for aluminum entrance work. It can go on a residential opening, but the application it is built around is commercial storefront and institutional entries where a concealed closer is wanted for looks or for abuse resistance.
