1) Will the Dorma RTS16 concealed closer work on a center hung aluminum storefront door?
That is exactly the application it is built for. The RTS16 is a center hung, end load unit packaged for aluminum door and frame construction, and it handles doors up to 250 lbs. If your door is offset hung or pivots at a jamb-side pivot point rather than the center of the door, this is the wrong closer body for the opening.
2) Can the RTS16 be used on a double acting door that swings both ways?
Yes. The RTS16 is rated for single or double acting service, so it will work on a door that swings in and out as well as a one-way entrance. It is also non-handed, so the same unit covers left and right hand openings without specifying hand at the time of order.
3) Which spring size should I order for a 3'-0" exterior aluminum entrance?
For a 2'-6" to 3'-0" exterior door, SZ3 is the standard closing force. Go to SZ4 for 3'-0" to 3'-6" exterior or 3'-6" to 4'-0" interior doors. If the opening has to meet a reduced opening force requirement, order BFE (barrier free, exterior, 3'-0" door) or BFI (barrier free, interior, 3'-0" door). SZ2 is the light opening force option.
4) What do I have to specify when ordering an RTS16 closer?
Four choices decide the part. Cushion stop angle, 90 or 105 degrees. Hold open, yes or no. Spring size, BFE, BFI, SZ2, SZ3 or SZ4. And package option, standard, with a 5mm extended spindle, or with an 8563 frame cover plate added. Finish, including the 8653 cover frame, is chosen separately from prime coat, aluminum, statuary bronze, dull bronze, black, dark duradonic bronze or gold.
5) What are the alternatives to the Dorma RTS16 if my doors are offset hung instead of center hung?
The RTS16 is a center hung unit, so an offset hung aluminum door needs a closer built for that pivot geometry. The Norton Rixson 0608 Series is an offset hung overhead concealed closer for aluminum doors up to 200 lbs. If the doors stay center hung, the Norton Rixson 608 Series and 700 Series are center hung concealed closers rated to 200 lbs, and the Rixson 73 Series is a heavy duty Grade 1 center hung double acting unit with cover plate at the same 250 lb capacity as the RTS16.
6) I need a concealed closer that opens to 180 degrees. Does the RTS16 do that?
The RTS16 is offered with 90 degree and 105 degree cushion settings. If the opening has to swing to 180 degrees, the Sargent 269 is an overhead concealed closer specified with 180 degree opening capability, listed as heavy duty Grade 1.
7) Should I pick the 90 degree or the 105 degree cushion on a concealed closer?
Pick the cushion angle to match where the door is allowed to stop. If a return wall, sidelite or adjacent fixture stops the leaf near square, take the 90 degree cushion. Yes. The Norton Rixson 608 Series and the Norton Rixson 700 Series are both center hung overhead concealed closers rated for 200 lb doors and listed as standard duty. The RTS16 is rated for 250 lb doors, so on a heavier or high-traffic leaf stay with the RTS16; on a lighter interior leaf either Rixson standard duty unit covers the opening.
14) Are the CRL Jackson overhead concealed closer bodies a drop-in substitute for the Dorma RTS16?
They are not a drop-in. The CRL Jackson 20-101M units are sold as closer body only, with no cover or frame hardware, in fixed functions such as 90 degree no hold-open and 105 degree no hold-open. The RTS16 is ordered as a package with a finish that includes the 8653 cover frame and can be specified with or without hold open. If you are replacing a Jackson body in an existing Jackson prep, stay with the Jackson body; the RTS16 is a Dorma prep.
15) What heavy duty concealed closer options exist if I need a Grade 1 listed unit with a cast iron body?
