DORMA RTS88 Series Overhead Concealed Door Closer

The RTS88 is designed to give lasting, dependable service where surface applied units and other types of closers are not suitable, or would interfere with the architectural design. It can be easily installed in wood, aluminum, or hollow metal doors and frames, for single and double-acting doors.

  • For single and double-acting doors
  • Dependable and easy to Install

Aesthetic advantages

Architects are often challenged to design buildings that are both beautiful and functional, down to the last detail. The DORMA RTS88 overhead concealed door closer offers the perfect solution for those who prefer the aesthetic advantages of a concealed door closer.

Vandalism protection

The RTS88 is an excellent replacement closer for problem entrances encountering vandalism of surface applied closers.

Benefits for the contractor

Contractors appreciate the RTS88 closer, because the majority of door and frame preparation is done prior to installation of the unit, resulting in less on-site machining.

Dormakaba RTS13 105 NHO SZ3 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How heavy a door can the Dorma RTS13 overhead concealed closer handle?
Up to 250 lbs of door weight. That covers most aluminum entrance doors and full glass storefront leaves. For comparison, the Norton Rixson 608 and 700 Series center hung concealed closers we carry are rated for 200 lb doors, so if you are at the top of the weight range the RTS13 gives you more headroom.
2) Do I need to order a left hand and right hand version of the RTS13?
No. The RTS13 is non-handed, so one part number covers both hands, and it works on single acting or double acting doors. That makes it simpler to stock if you are maintaining a building with entrances swinging both ways.
3) Which spring size should I pick for a 3-foot exterior aluminum entrance?
Five spring sizes are offered on the RTS13. SZ3 is the standard closing force and covers 2'-6" to 3'-0" exterior doors, or 3'-0" to 3'-6" interior. SZ4 is the strongest, for 3'-0" to 3'-6" exterior and 3'-6" to 4'-0" interior. SZ2 is a light opening force option. For openings that must meet a reduced opening force requirement, BFE is the barrier free size for exterior doors at 3'-0" width and BFI is the barrier free size for interior doors at the same width. A 3-foot exterior leaf sits right at the SZ3 / SZ4 boundary, so pick based on wind and stack pressure at that entrance.
4) I have to meet a reduced opening force requirement on an interior door. Which RTS13 do I order?
Order the BFI spring size, the barrier free light opening force option for interior doors at 3'-0" width. For an exterior leaf at the same width, BFE is the barrier free equivalent. Both are built around lighter opening force than the standard SZ3.
5) My door is offset hung, not center hung. What concealed closer should I use instead of the RTS13?
The RTS13 is a center hung end load unit, so it will not suit an offset hung opening. For an aluminum door on offset pivots, the Norton Rixson 0608 Series is an offset hung overhead concealed closer for aluminum doors up to 200 lbs, listed as standard duty. Confirm your door leaf weight against that 200 lb figure, since the RTS13 is rated to 250 lbs.
6) I need the door to swing a full 180 degrees. Will the RTS13 do that?
The RTS13 is offered with a 90 degree or 105 degree cushion stop, so its travel is set at one of those two points. If the opening has to reach 180 degrees, the Sargent 269 is an overhead concealed closer with 180 degree opening capability, listed as heavy duty Grade 1.
7) What is the difference between the 90 degree and 105 degree cushion on the RTS13?
The cushion stop sets where the closer cushions the door at the end of the opening swing. The RTS13 is available with either a 90 degree or a 105 degree cushion. Choose 90 degrees where a sidewall, return, or adjacent glass limits how far the leaf can travel; choose 105 degrees where you want a wider opening for traffic or carts.
8) Can I get the RTS13 with hold open?
Yes, hold open is an option on the RTS13, and it is also offered without. Hold open is useful for loading doors and deliveries, but on a fire rated opening a mechanical hold open is generally not permitted, so on those doors order the non hold open version.
9) What extras can I add to an RTS13 order, and when do I need them?
Three package options: Standard, add the 8563 frame cover plate, or with a 5mm extended spindle. The cover plate closes off the frame pocket for a finished look on the head. The extended spindle is what you want when the top rail or header condition puts the door a little further from the closer than standard, so the stock spindle will not fully engage the door's top pivot.
10) Is a concealed closer or a surface mounted closer the better choice for a vandalism prone entrance?
Concealed is the safer bet. The RTS88 family, RTS13 included, is specified as a replacement for problem entrances where surface applied closers get vandalized, since the body sits inside the frame with nothing exposed to grab or pry. It is also the answer when a surface closer would clash with the architectural design. Where the frame head cannot be prepped or machined, a surface closer stays the practical option.
11) Is there a lighter duty center hung concealed closer if my door is under 200 pounds?
Yes. The Norton Rixson 608 Series and the Norton Rixson 700 Series are both center hung overhead concealed closers listed as standard duty for 200 lb doors. The Dorma RTS13 is rated to 250 lbs and is offered in five spring sizes from barrier free interior openings through SZ4 for 3'-6" to 4'-0" interior doors, so step up to it when the leaf is heavier or wider.
12) Are the CRL Jackson 20-101M closers a drop-in replacement for an RTS13?
They are not the same package. The CRL Jackson 20-101M units are sold as closer body only, in regular duty (20-101M-01 at 105 degree and 20-101M-03 at 90 degree, both non hold open), heavy duty (20-101M-09, 105 degree non hold open), and an adjustable spring power version (20-101M-17, 105 degree non hold open). The Dorma RTS13 is offered in hold open and non hold open builds, with 90 or 105 degree cushion, five fixed spring sizes, and package options including an 8563 frame cover plate or a 5mm extended spindle. If you need a hold open function or the cover plate included, the CRL body-only units will not cover it.
13) Which concealed closer should I pick if I want one unit I can field-adjust for different door widths instead of ordering a spring size?
The Dorma RTS13 is ordered by fixed spring size, from BFI and BFE barrier free through SZ2, SZ3 and SZ4, so the closing force is chosen at time of order. If you would rather stock one body, the CRL Jackson 20-101M-17 is an adjustable spring power overhead concealed closer body, supplied 105 degree non hold open.
14) For a high-traffic institutional entrance, how does the RTS13 compare to a cast iron body closer?
The Sargent 268 is an overhead concealed closer with a cast iron body, listed as heavy duty Grade 1. The Dorma RTS13 is a commercial closer rated for 250 lb doors, non-handed, and usable single or double acting, with most of the door and frame preparation done before the unit goes in so there is less on-site machining. Both are candidates for a heavy entrance; the choice usually comes down to the pivot arrangement and the prep already in the frame.
15) What finishes does the RTS13 concealed closer come in?
Seven finishes, and the choice includes the 8653 cover frame: 600 prime coat, 689 aluminum, 690 statuary bronze, 691 dull bronze, 693 black, 695 dark duradonic bronze, and 696 gold. 689 aluminum and 693 black are the usual matches for clear and black anodized storefront; 600 prime coat is for painting to match a custom color.
16) Does using a concealed closer like this mean more work on site for my installer?
Less, generally. With the RTS88 concealed closers most of the door and frame preparation is done before the unit is installed, so there is less on-site machining. That matters on a storefront replacement where you are working in an occupied building. The tradeoff is that the frame prep has to be right, because a concealed pocket is not something you adjust later.
17) Is the RTS13 rated for commercial traffic, or is it a residential closer?
Commercial. The RTS13 is classed as a commercial door control, built for entrance duty on aluminum, wood, or hollow metal doors and frames up to 250 lbs. It is not a light residential product.
18) What overhead concealed closer keeps the arm exposed for service access instead of fully concealing it?
The Sargent 278 is an overhead concealed closer with an exposed arm, listed as heavy duty Grade 1. The Dorma RTS13 takes the opposite approach, a fully concealed installation chosen where surface applied units would interfere with the architectural design and to resist vandalism of exposed closer bodies.
