1) Will the Dorma RTS17 concealed closer work on a center hung aluminum storefront door?
That is exactly what the RTS17 is built for. It is the center hung, end load configuration of the Dorma RTS88 overhead concealed closer, packaged for aluminum door and frame applications. It handles doors up to 250 lbs and works single or double acting. If your door is offset pivoted rather than center hung, this is the wrong configuration.
2) Which spring size should I order for a 3'-0" exterior aluminum entrance?
For a 3'-0" exterior door, SZ3 is the standard closing force (it covers 2'-6" to 3'-0" exterior and 3'-0" to 3'-6" interior). Go to SZ4 if the door runs 3'-0" to 3'-6" exterior or up to 4'-0" interior. Where you need reduced opening force, BFE is the barrier free spring for a 3'-0" exterior door and BFI the interior equivalent; SZ2 is the other light opening force option.
3) Can I get the RTS17 with a hold open, and at what degree?
Hold open is an order option, yes or no, on the RTS17. Separately you pick the cushion stop angle, either 90 degrees or 105 degrees. Those are two different choices, so decide how far the door should swing before it cushions and whether it should stay put at that point.
4) What else do I need to order with the RTS17 besides the closer body?
Three package choices on the RTS17: standard, with the 8563 frame cover plate added, or with a 5mm extended spindle. The extended spindle is the one to take when the door or threshold condition needs more spindle reach. Finish selection covers the 8653 cover frame as well, in prime coat 600, aluminum 689, statuary bronze 690, dull bronze 691, black 693, dark duradonic bronze 695, or gold 696.
5) The door is offset hung, not center hung - can I still use the RTS17?
No. The RTS17 is built for a center hung end load application, so the pivot point has to be at the center of the door. For an offset hung aluminum door, the Norton Rixson 0608 Series is an offset hung overhead concealed closer for aluminum doors up to 200 lbs at standard duty.
6) I need the door to swing a full 180 degrees - is the RTS17 the right closer?
The RTS17 is offered with a 90 degree or 105 degree cushion, and optional hold open, so its cushioned swing range tops out at 105 degrees. Where the opening has to run to 180 degrees, the Sargent 269 is an overhead concealed closer with 180 degree opening capability, listed as heavy duty Grade 1.
7) Do I need to specify left or right hand when ordering the RTS17?
No handing to specify. The RTS17 is non-handed and covers both single acting and double acting openings, so the same unit serves either swing direction. What you do have to call out is spring size, cushion angle, hold open, and finish.
8) Is an overhead concealed closer better than a surface closer for an entrance that keeps getting vandalized?
Concealed is the usual fix. The RTS88 unit mounts up in the frame head, so there is no exposed body or arm to pry, hang on, or unbolt the way there is with a surface closer. The RTS88 unit installs in wood, aluminum, or hollow metal doors and frames. The RTS17 specifically is the package built for aluminum door and frame applications with center hung end load. For a wood or hollow metal opening you want the RTS88 package prepped for that application instead.
10) I only need to replace the closer body in an existing aluminum door - is there a simpler option than a full RTS17?
Yes. The RTS17 is ordered as a complete package with finish and optional cover plate or extended spindle. If the existing prep and hardware are sound and you only need the mechanism, CRL Jackson sells overhead concealed closer body only units: 20-101M-03 is a regular duty body with a 90 degree non hold open function, 20-101M-01 is the same regular duty body at 105 degrees, and 20-101M-09 is the heavy duty body at 105 degrees non hold open.
11) How do I choose closing force if I do not want to commit to a fixed spring size like the RTS17 uses?
The RTS17 is ordered by spring size at the time of purchase - SZ2 light opening force, SZ3 standard closing force for 3'-0" to 3'-6" interior and 2'-6" to 3'-0" exterior doors, SZ4 strongest closing force, plus barrier free BFE and BFI options for 3'-0" doors. If you would rather set the power after the door is hung, the CRL Jackson 20-101M-17 is an adjustable spring power overhead concealed closer body, 105 degree non hold open.
12) What overhead concealed closer should I standardize on for a hollow metal opening where a cast iron body is specified?
The RTS17 package is set up for aluminum door and frame applications, center hung end load. Where a specification calls out a cast iron closer body, the Sargent 268 is an overhead concealed closer with a cast iron body, heavy duty and Grade 1. The Sargent 278 is the related heavy duty Grade 1 overhead concealed unit with an exposed arm if the arm does not have to be hidden.
13) Are CRL Jackson overhead concealed closer bodies a direct substitute for an RTS17?
They are not a like for like package. The RTS17 ships as a non-handed center hung end load closer for aluminum doors and frames, ordered with a finish that also covers the 8653 cover frame and with options such as the 8563 frame cover plate or a 5mm extended spindle. The CRL Jackson 20-101M series units - 20-101M-01, 20-101M-03, 20-101M-09 and 20-101M-17 - are sold as closer body only, so cover plates, spindle and any prep components are handled separately.
