Dorma ZR08 96/97/9800 Series - Classroom Function Z Escutcheon with R Lever Trim

Classroom function on the ZR08 trim means the outside lever always retracts the latch when it's unlocked, and the key is what locks or unlocks that lever. Turn the key to lock, and the outside lever goes rigid so entry is by key only; turn it back and anyone can walk in on the lever. Nobody gets locked in, since the push bar on the inside always releases the door. That's the behavior a school or office wants on a corridor door where a teacher or supervisor controls access from the hallway side.

The ZR08 escutcheon and lever is built for the Dorma 9600, 9700 and 9800 series exit devices. It is device trim only, so it mounts to the outside of the door and works through the exit device you already have (or are ordering) on the inside. It is not a standalone lock, and it will not mount to another manufacturer's exit device.

Rim, surface vertical rod, and concealed vertical rod devices are all covered by the ZR08 trim. So whether the opening is a single door on a rim device or a pair running SVR or CVR at the head and threshold, the same classroom escutcheon and lever applies, as long as the device is a Dorma 9600, 9700 or 9800.

Handing is not optional here, and the ZR08 is made in LHR (left hand reverse) and RHR (right hand reverse) only. That's normal for exit device trim, because an exit device door always swings out toward the person pushing it, which makes every such opening a reverse bevel. Stand outside the door, on the key side. If the hinges are on your right and the door pulls toward you, it's RHR. Hinges on your left, it's LHR. Get this wrong and the lever points the wrong way.

Trim only. The ZR08 escutcheon and lever is the outside half of the opening, and it has to be paired with a Dorma 9600, 9700 or 9800 exit device on the push side to work. If you're building a new opening from scratch, you're ordering the device, this trim, and a 1-1/8 inch mortise cylinder (or the 6-pin Schlage C version, which includes one). If you're replacing failed or damaged pull-side trim on a device that's still good, the trim alone is the order.

If the device staying on the door is a Dorma 9600, 9700 or 9800 and the original trim was classroom function with a lever, the ZR08 is the like-for-like replacement and uses the same escutcheon-style mounting through the door to the device. Match the handing to the leaf and match the finish to the rest of the trim on that opening. If your old trim carried a cylinder and you want to keep the building key, order less cylinder and move the existing 1-1/8 inch mortise cylinder across.

Keyed alike is available on the ZR08 when you take the 6-pin Schlage C cylinder, so a group of classroom or office doors can run on one key. Keyed different is the standard if each door needs its own. If you're ordering less cylinder, select None for keying and have your locksmith pin the mortise cylinders into your existing system instead. There's also a free-text field for special keying instructions, which is where a master key level or a construction keying note belongs.

Pick classroom when someone needs to leave the outside lever unlocked for stretches of the day and lock it with a key when they choose, which is how the ZR08 behaves: key locks or unlocks the lever, and it stays that way until keyed again. Choose a storeroom-function trim instead when the outside lever should be locked at all times and every entry is by key, with no way for staff to leave it open. For an exterior door on a building you want secured by default, storeroom is the safer spec; for a classroom, conference room, or a suite door staffed during business hours, classroom is the one.

Three finishes on the ZR08: 605 bright brass, 630 satin stainless steel, and 695 oil rubbed dark bronze. All three are offered in both handings and with or without the cylinder. For a commercial building already running satin stainless or satin chrome trim, 630 is the match. 695 goes with dark bronze storefront and older bronze-finish openings. 605 is the polished brass look, usually a hospitality or older institutional specification.
