1) Will Dormakaba 12690-DS4-BK fobs work with Saffire LX or Quantum Series locks?
Yes. The 12690-DS4-BK DESFire fob is stated to work with Dormakaba's Saffire LX, Quantum Series, RT Plus locks, Gen II RFID encoders, and other EV3-equipped readers. If your readers are Dormakaba on that list, these drop straight into the existing credential program.
2) What frequency and card standard do these Dormakaba DESFire fobs use, and will my 125 kHz prox readers read them?
These fobs run at 13.56 MHz on the ISO/IEC 14443 Type A standard. That is not the same technology as 125 kHz prox, so a legacy prox-only reader will not read them. Dormakaba does publish a DESFire EV3 + Prox dual-frequency version that carries 125 kHz prox alongside the 13.56 MHz credential for buildings mid-migration; that is the one to order if some openings still run old readers.
3) How secure is the DESFire 4K fob compared to a plain prox card we hand out now?
The 4K Mada fob uses AES-128 encryption with mutual three-pass authentication and secure channel-based file transfer, so the credential and reader verify each other before any data moves. A standard 125 kHz prox card has none of that; its number is read in the clear. For a property replacing prox because credentials were being cloned, this is the reason to move.
4) How many fobs come in a pack of the Dormakaba 12690-DS4-BK?
