1) Does the Saffire LX-D deadbolt work on a fire rated door?
The Saffire LX-D is UL 10C and ULC S-104 listed on fire door assemblies rated up to and including 20 minutes. If your opening is a 20 minute rated unit door, it is covered. Anything above that, the LX-D is not the part to spec today.
2) What software do I need to run Dormakaba Saffire LX-D locks on a property?
The LX-D is managed by dormakaba Community access management software, and that software is sold separately from the lock. Community handles resident units, amenities, common areas and perimeter doors from one platform and issues both RFID credentials and BLE mobile keys, so you do not need a second application for mobile access. Budget the software into the project, not just the lock count.
3) What happens if the batteries die in a Saffire LX-D deadbolt?
The LX-D runs on 3 AA batteries for up to two years in normal use and warns you first with a low battery indicator. If it does go flat, there is a concealed override that takes an electronic battery backup, so staff can power the lock from outside and get in. There is no mechanical key cylinder to fall back on, so the override tool belongs in the maintenance kit before the first lock goes on a door.
4) Is the Saffire LX-D deadbolt Grade 1 or Grade 2, and what is the bolt throw?
Grade 2, certified to BHMA A156.36 grade 2 and A156.25, with a 1 inch deadbolt throw. The 1 inch throw is the commercial standard for a deadbolt strike, so it drops into a standard deadbolt strike prep. If your spec calls for Grade 1 on a unit entry, a mechanical option like the Design Hardware D1 Series or the Accentra D111 meets Grade 1, but neither gives you RFID or mobile credentials.
5) Can I put a Saffire LX-D deadbolt on an exterior door or a gate?
Yes, with one caveat on finish. The lock is rated for -31F to +158F (-35C to +70C) and 0 to 90 percent non-condensing humidity at 86F, and meets IP54, so weather exposure at a perimeter or amenity door is within spec. The black finish is specified for interior use only, so for outside openings order 626 satin chrome, 625 bright chrome or 619 satin nickel instead.
6) Should I use the Saffire LX-D deadbolt or the mortise version on apartment unit doors?
Depends on what else is in the door. The LX-D is a deadbolt only, so it needs a separate latch or knob to keep the door closed, which suits a unit door that already has a passage latch. The Saffire family also runs LX-M mortise, LX-I interconnected, LX-L latch and LX-P panic. If you want one device that latches and deadbolts together, LX-I interconnected or LX-M mortise is the better call; if you are adding electronic access to doors that already have working latch hardware, the LX-D is the smaller change.
7) Do I have to visit every Saffire LX-D lock to cancel a lost fob?
No. The LX-D uses no-touring credential logic: when a newly issued credential is presented at the lock, it automatically cancels the prior credential for that user. Re-issue the resident a new fob or mobile key and the old one dies the first time the new one is used at the door. That is the difference that keeps a large turnover property from sending a tech to every opening.
8) I need an access controlled deadbolt tied into an alarm or card system, not a standalone lock. Is the Saffire LX-D right?
No. The LX-D is a battery powered lock with its own onboard credential reader and no wiring to a panel; access rights live in dormakaba Community and travel on the credential. If you need a bolt that a building access control panel energizes and releases, the DynaLock 1300 Series mortise electric deadbolt is the wired part for that job. Choose LX-D for credential based control at the door, the electric deadbolt for panel controlled release.
9) What is the closest RFID and Bluetooth electronic deadbolt alternative to the Dormakaba Saffire LX-D?

No. The DynaLock 1300 Series is a heavy duty mortise electric deadbolt, meaning it is a bolt released by an external access control system wired into the frame or door.
