OVERVIEW

Dormakaba 9600 Simplex Locks eliminate problems and costs associated with issuing, controlling, and collecting keys and cards.

Kaba Simplex 9600 Series mechanical pushbutton lock uses to same combination system as our other pushbutton access controls and are specifically designed for cabinet doors, desk drawers, and similar applications. They are ideal for use in many locations, such as medicine chests, liquor cabinets, gun boxes, courier pick-up boxes, home entertainment units, cleaning supply cabinets, tool chests, private files, audio-visual cabinets, and petty cash drawers. This fully mechanical lock eliminates the material and labor expense of battery replacements, has a single access-code and is programmed via the keypad without removing the lock from the door.

1) Will the Dormakaba Simplex 9600 cabinet lock work on a wood cabinet door, or is it only for sheet metal?
Both, but you pick which when you order. The Simplex 9600 is built to the door material and thickness: a wood application version for doors up to 7/8 inch (22 mm), and sheet metal versions for 1/8 inch, 3/16 inch, and 1/4 inch material, plus a 14 to 20 gauge option. The mounting parts differ between the wood and sheet metal builds, which is why this is an order choice and not something you adjust on site. Measure the drawer front or door leaf before you specify.
2) Does the Simplex 9600 pushbutton cabinet lock need batteries or wiring?
Neither. The 9600 is a fully mechanical pushbutton lock, so there is no battery to replace and nothing to power or run cable to. That is the practical reason people put these on cabinets scattered across a building: no truck roll every couple of years to swap cells, and the lock keeps working through a power outage. The code is entered on solid metal pushbuttons, not a powered keypad.
3) Can I give each employee their own code on a Simplex 9600 cabinet lock?
No. The 9600 runs on a single access code shared by everyone who needs in. There is no way to issue the night crew a different number than the day crew, and removing one person's access means recoding the lock for everybody. That is the trade for a lock with no battery and no wiring. If you need per-user codes on a supply cabinet or a drug cart, a mechanical Simplex is the wrong tool and you want an electronic credential lock instead.
4) Deadbolt or spring latch on a Simplex 9600 cabinet lock, which one should I order?
It comes down to whether you want the cabinet to lock itself. The deadbolt version has to be manually relocked every time, so if someone walks away without throwing it, the cabinet sits unlocked. The spring latch relocks automatically when the door or drawer is pushed shut. Three locking device choices are offered: Standard Deadbolt, Spring Loaded Latch, and Spring Loaded Latch with Key Override. For a medicine chest, a cash drawer, or anything staff close on the run, the spring latch is the one that is actually locked at the end of the shift. The deadbolt suits a cabinet that gets opened once and closed deliberately.
5) What happens if someone forgets the combination on a Simplex 9600 cabinet lock, is there a key bypass?
Only if you specify it. The key override is offered on the Spring Loaded Latch with Key Override version, which gives you a keyed way in when the code is lost. Order the Standard Deadbolt or the plain Spring Loaded Latch and the combination is the only way the cabinet opens. On a cabinet nobody touches for months, or one an outside crew uses, the override version is worth the line item.
6) What is the difference between end throw and cross throw on a Simplex 9600, and which do I need?
It is the direction the bolt travels out of the lock case. End throw pushes the bolt straight out the end of the body, cross throw sends it out the side, and which one you need is set by where the strike or keeper sits relative to the lock. A tall cabinet door with the frame edge alongside the lock usually takes cross throw; a drawer with the catch at the end of travel takes end throw. Three choices exist: Cross Throw, End Throw, and End Throw with Cross Throw Parts. That third one ships with the cross throw parts included, which is the safe order when you are doing a run of mixed casework and have not measured every keeper.
7) Can a Simplex 9600 be mounted on a drawer front or turned sideways, and does handing matter?
Handing is a non-issue. The 9600 is non-handed and installs horizontally or vertically, so the same lock goes on a left hand door, a right hand door, or a drawer front with the keypad turned on its side. One part number covers a whole run of casework regardless of how each piece swings, which is what you want when you are standardizing a floor of cabinets rather than ordering piece by piece.
8) How do you change the code on a Simplex 9600, and does the lock have to come off the cabinet?
The lock stays where it is. Recoding is done through the keypad with the 9600 still mounted in the door, so turning over a code after staff changes is a few minutes at the cabinet rather than a disassembly and a bench job. On a facility with dozens of these, that is the difference between recoding an entire floor in an afternoon and scheduling it as a work order.
9) Will a Simplex 9600 hold up on a cabinet the public or a crew can get at, like a tool crib or a supply cabinet?
It is built for abuse, not for a home office. The face plate is all metal cast, the pushbuttons are solid metal and vandal resistant, and the exterior knob is force resistant and protected. The knob runs on a ball bearing clutch, and the lock body is brass or bronze. It is classed as commercial hardware. That construction is why these end up on gun boxes, liquor cabinets, and tool chests rather than a plastic keypad latch.
10) I need the cabinet lock to match the satin chrome hardware already on my casework. What finishes does the Simplex 9600 come in?
Three: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, and 626 satin chrome. If the pulls and hinges on your existing run are 626, the satin chrome 9600 lines up with them. Finish is an independent order choice from the bolt throw, the locking device, and the door material, so you are not forced into a finish by the configuration you need.
