Simplex 5000 Series Mechanical Pushbutton Cylindrical Knob Lock

Simplex Mechanical Pushbutton Locks eliminate problems and costs associated with issuing, controlling, and collecting keys and cards.

The Simplex 5000 Series provides exterior access by combination, while allowing free egress. This fully mechanical lock elimates the material and labor expense of battery replacements, has a single access-code and is programmed via the keypad without removing the lock from the door. The lock is available in a wide range of configurations.

DEFAULT OPTION SELECTION

The default option selections have been made based on the most commonly ordered configuration. If a model shows as backordered, it's likely ZenSupply has additional parts/accessories on hand to "build" the product and therefore ship the product faster.

Dormakaba 5025-XS-WK-26D-41 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Simplex 5021 pushbutton knob lock fit a 1-3/4 inch commercial door?
Yes. The Simplex 5000 Series cylindrical pushbutton lock covers doors from 1-3/8 inches to 2-1/4 inches thick, and it ships pre-assembled for the 1-5/8 to 2 inch range, so a standard 1-3/4 inch commercial door needs no thickness adjustment out of the box. Wood or metal both work; the prep is ASA 161 with additional through holes for the pushbutton assembly, so it is not a drop-in on a plain 161 prep without drilling those extra holes.
2) What backset and latch throw do I order for a Simplex 5000 Series pushbutton lock, and will it hit my existing strike?
Two backsets are offered: 2-3/4 inch (the standard configuration) and 2-3/8 inch. Latch throw is 1/2 inch on both, with a 3/4 inch throw available on the 2-3/4 inch backset only. Measure from the door edge to the center of the existing bore to pick the backset. A 1/2 inch throw drops into a normal cylindrical strike; if your frame has a deep or worn strike pocket, or the door has gapped over time, the 3/4 inch throw latch is the one that stays engaged.
3) Can I put a Simplex 5021 pushbutton lock on an aluminum storefront door?
Only if the stile is wide enough. The Simplex 5000 Series cylindrical lock needs a minimum 5 inch stile because the pushbutton housing and the bore both have to land in the stile face. Most narrow stile aluminum storefront doors run well under that, so this is a wide stile or hollow metal and wood door lock. For a narrow stile glass door opening, the mechanical pushbutton answer is a Simplex 900 Series narrow stile deadbolt or a Simplex 3000 mortise style unit rather than a cylindrical knob lock.
4) Does the Simplex 5021 need batteries or wiring?
Neither. It is a fully mechanical pushbutton lock, so there is nothing to wire and no battery to change on a schedule. That is the main reason facilities standardize on it for remote openings, mechanical rooms, and storage where running power is not worth the cost. The tradeoff is a single access code shared by everyone, with no audit trail and no per-user credentials. If you need to know who opened the door or revoke one person's access, this is the wrong platform and you want an electronic access control lock instead.
5) How do I change the code on a Simplex 5000 Series lock, and do I have to take it off the door?
Programming is done through the keypad with the lock still mounted. On the 502x models, which is what the 5021 is, the combination is changed from the exterior side. If your policy requires the code change be made from the secure side, that is the 503x or 505x model, which move combination change to the interior and are D.O.D. 5220.22M compliant for supplemental access control. There is one code, so a change replaces it for every user.
6) Can I key a Simplex pushbutton lock into my existing master key system?
Yes, through the key override, and you pick the cylinder format when you order. Seven choices: B for small format interchangeable core (Best and equivalents, 6 or 7-pin), C for Corbin Russwin large format (6 or 7-pin), M for Medeco, ASSA, Yale or Abloy large format (5 or 6-pin), R for Sargent large format, S for Schlage large format, and two key-in-lever options that come with a cylinder, XK on the dormakaba 90 keyway and XS on the Schlage C keyway. The B, C, M, R and S options do not include a core, which is the point: your locksmith drops in a core already on your system.
7) Can I use a Simplex 5000 pushbutton lock on a fire rated door?
Yes. The Simplex 5000 Series carries a 3-hour UL and ULC fire rating for A labeled doors. It is also a Grade 1 lock, which is the heavy duty commercial rating, and the pushbuttons are metal and vandal resistant, so it holds up in a stairwell or a corridor opening with real traffic.
8) Does a Simplex pushbutton lock lock people in? Can they get out without knowing the code?
Egress is free from the inside. The combination controls exterior access only; the interior knob always retracts the latch, no code required. That is what makes it usable on an office, storage room, or tenant space where an occupant has to be able to leave without a credential.
9) Is the Simplex 5021 knob lock handed, and does it matter which way my door swings?
Non-handed. It arrives pre-assembled for a left-hand door, and the handing is reversed in the field during installation, so one part number covers every opening in the building. That is worth knowing before you order a fleet of them for a property, since you are not splitting the order between LH and RH.
10) What is the difference between the Simplex 5021 and the 5041 passage model?
Function. The 502x, which the 5021 is, gives combination entry with key override and exterior combination change. The 504x adds a passage feature, letting you hold the lock in an unlocked state so the door stays free-entry during business hours and gets re-secured after. The 503x and 505x move combination change to the interior side and are D.O.D. compliant, with 505x being the interior-change version that also has passage. All four are the same cylindrical chassis and the same door prep, so the choice is purely about who changes the code and whether you need a daytime passage mode.
11) What comes in the box with a Simplex 5021, and what else do I need to buy to install it?
You get the lock assembly, the installation manual, a full scale template, and the mounting hardware. What is not included depends on your key override choice: the B, C, M, R and S options are cylinder housings only and you supply the core, while the XK and XS options ship with the dormakaba 1599 6-pin cylinder and tailpieces already prepped to the dormakaba 90 or Schlage C keyway, keyed different. A strike is not part of the assembly, so if you are cutting a new opening rather than replacing an existing cylindrical lock, plan on a strike and the ASA 161 prep with the extra through holes.
12) Is a knob or a lever better for a Simplex pushbutton lock on an ADA opening?
For an ADA-required opening, go lever. The 5021WK is the knob version, and while the Simplex 5000 Series is offered with ADA-compliant levers, a knob is not an ADA-compliant operating device because it needs tight grasping and twisting of the wrist. Use the knob where ADA does not apply or where a knob is deliberately specified to discourage casual use, and specify the lever trim on accessible routes and public-facing doors.
13) What finishes does the Simplex 5000 Series pushbutton knob lock come in?
Five: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, and 744 dark bronze with brass accents. If you are matching existing hardware across a building, 626 satin chrome is the usual commercial default and the standard configuration here. The housings are brass or bronze substrate, so the finish is plated metal rather than painted.
