Simplex Mechanical Pushbutton Locks eliminate problems and costs associated with issuing, controlling, and collecting keys and cards.

The Simplex 5000 Series provides exterior access by combination, while allowing free egress. This fully mechanical lock elimates the material and labor expense of battery replacements, has a single access-code and is programmed via the keypad without removing the lock from the door. The lock is available in a wide range of configurations.

1) Will the Dormakaba Simplex 503x pushbutton lock fit a 1-3/4 inch door?
Yes. The Simplex 503x cylindrical knob lock covers doors from 1-3/8 inches up to 2-1/4 inches thick, so a standard 1-3/4 inch commercial door is right in the middle of the range. It ships pre-assembled for 1-5/8 to 2 inch doors, so a 1-3/4 inch door needs no thickness adjustment out of the box. Thinner 1-3/8 inch interior doors and thicker 2-1/4 inch doors do require adjusting the assembly at install.
2) Which backset do I order on the Simplex 503x, and will it latch into my existing strike?
Two backsets are offered: 2-3/4 inch and 2-3/8 inch, the two backsets used on cylindrical prep. Measure from the door edge to the center of the existing bore and match it. On latch throw, the standard latch is 1/2 inch, which suits a normal cylindrical strike in a flush frame. If your frame is out of alignment, the gap is wide, or you have a deeper strike pocket, order the 2-3/4 inch backset with the 3/4 inch throw latch instead. The 3/4 inch throw is only paired with the 2-3/4 inch backset, so a 2-3/8 inch opening gets the 1/2 inch latch.
3) What is the difference between the Simplex 502x and the 503x?
Both are combination entry with key override. The split is where you change the code. The 502x changes combination from the exterior; the 503x changes it from the interior side of the door, which is what makes it D.O.D. compliant. If your facility requires that the code cannot be reprogrammed from the unsecured side, the 503x is the one to order. If you want passage function on top of that (the ability to hold the lock unlocked for a period), you are looking at the 505x rather than the 503x.
4) Can the Simplex 503x go on a narrow stile aluminum glass door?
No. The recommended minimum stile for the Simplex 503x is 5 inches, so a narrow stile aluminum storefront door does not have the material to take it. It is a cylindrical lock on ASA 161 prep with extra through holes, which needs the flat width. For a narrow stile glass door you want a narrow stile device with mortise or deadlatch prep, not this lock.
5) What key override options are available on the Simplex 503x, and is a core included?
Seven override choices. Two ship with a cylinder in the lock: XK with a Kaba 1599 6-pin cylinder on the Kaba 90 keyway, and XS with the same cylinder on the Schlage C keyway, both keyed different. The other five are core prep only, with the core supplied by you or your locksmith: B for small format interchangeable Best and equivalents in 6 or 7-pin, C for Corbin Russwin LFIC in 6 or 7-pin, M for Medeco, ASSA, Yale or Abloy LFIC in 5 or 6-pin, R for Sargent LFIC and S for Schlage LFIC. If you are keying this into an existing masterkey system, pick the letter that matches the system you already run and order the core separately.
6) What door prep does the Simplex 503x need, and does it work on hollow metal as well as wood?
It installs on both wood and metal doors. The prep is ASA 161, the standard cylindrical lock prep, plus additional through holes for the pushbutton mechanism, so an existing 161 bore gets you most of the way but not all of it. The box includes a full scale template for drilling those extra holes. Confirm the bore center matches the backset you ordered before you cut.
7) Does the Simplex 503x need batteries or wiring?
Neither. The 503x is fully mechanical: the pushbutton keypad drives the lock directly, there are no batteries to change and nothing to run power to. Code changes are done through the keypad with the lock still on the door. For a property manager that means no battery replacement rounds across a building, and for a contractor it means no electrician and no door cord.
8) How many codes does a Simplex 5000 mechanical pushbutton lock hold?
One. The Simplex 5000 Series carries a single access code shared by everyone who uses the door. That works well for a mechanical room, a storage room, or a shared back entrance, where the same code goes to a crew. If you need per user codes, an audit trail, or to revoke one person without changing everyone, a mechanical pushbutton lock is the wrong tool and you want an electronic access control lock.
9) Is the Simplex 503x handed, and can I use it on a right hand door?
Non-handed. The 503x arrives pre-assembled for a left hand door, and the handing is changed in the field during install, so one part number covers both swings. Order the same lock for a right hand opening and reverse it on the bench.
10) Does the Simplex 503x meet ADA for a handicap accessible opening?
The Simplex 5000 Series is called out as ADA compliant with ADA compliant levers. Note the 503x configuration here is the knob version. On an accessible route where the operable hardware must be usable without tight grasping or twisting, specify the lever trim rather than the knob.
11) Will a mechanical pushbutton lock hold up on an exterior door that gets abused?
The pushbuttons are metal and vandal resistant, the housings are brass or bronze, and the 5000 Series is rated weather resistant under the D.O.D. 5220.22M listing. That is the case for using it on an exterior back door or a yard gate house door where a plastic keypad would not last. It is a Grade 1 commercial lock, not a residential one.
12) What comes in the box with the Simplex 503x, and what do I have to buy separately?
The carton holds the lock assembly, the installation manual, a full scale template, and the mounting hardware needed to hang it. What is not in the box depends on the override you picked: the B, C, M, R and S versions are prepped for a core but the core itself is not included, so order that with your keying. The XK and XS versions include the Kaba cylinder. A strike is not called out as separate, so check the existing frame strike matches the latch throw you selected.
13) What finishes does the Simplex 503x come in to match the rest of my building's hardware?
Five finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, and 744 dark bronze with brass accents. 626 satin chrome is the usual match for commercial openings already running satin chrome or satin stainless trim. If the doors around it are polished brass, 605 lines up.
