The Simplex 5000 Series provides exterior access by combination, while allowing free egress. This fully mechanical lock elimates the material and labor expense of battery replacements, has a single access-code and is programmed via the keypad without removing the lock from the door. Dormakaba 5031XS-WL-26D-41 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What is the difference between the Simplex 5031 and the 5021 pushbutton lock?
Both are combination entry with key override, but the code change happens in different places. The 503x changes its combination from the interior side and is D.O.D. compliant; the 502x changes the combination from the exterior. If your facility requires D.O.D. 5220.22M compliance for supplemental access control, or you do not want anyone able to reprogram the lock from the unsecured side, the 503x is the one to specify. The 504x and 505x add a passage function, which the 5031 does not have.
2) Will the Simplex 5031 latch into my existing strike?
The standard latch on the 5031 is a 1/2 inch throw, which is what a typical ASA strike in a commercial frame is cut for. A 3/4 inch throw latch is available at the 2-3/4 inch backset if your frame has a deeper strike pocket or the door has a gap that a 1/2 inch throw will not bridge. At 2-3/8 inch backset only the 1/2 inch throw latch is offered.
3) Do I have to order the Simplex 5031 handed for a right hand door?
No. The 5031 is non-handed. It arrives pre-assembled for a left-hand door and the handing is changed in the field, so one part number covers both swings and you can stock a single lock for a mixed building.
4) Does the Simplex 5031 come with a key cylinder or do I supply my own core?
It depends on the key override option you pick. The XS and XK options ship with a dormakaba key-in-lever cylinder included, XS prepped to the Schlage C keyway and XK to the dormakaba 90 keyway. The B (SFIC Best and equivalents, 6 or 7-pin) and the large format options for Corbin Russwin, Medeco/ASSA/Yale/Abloy, Sargent, and Schlage do not include a core, so a locksmith supplies one from the existing keying system. On the options with a cylinder included you also choose keyed different or keyed alike across multiple locks.
5) Can I put a Simplex 5031 on a narrow stile aluminum storefront door?
No. The 5031 is a wide stile lock with a 5 inch minimum recommended stile. A typical aluminum storefront narrow stile is well under that, so the lock body and keypad have nowhere to land. For a narrow stile door, the Simplex 5000 exit trim configuration mounted to a compatible exit device is the route to take instead of the cylindrical lock.
6) Can I use a Simplex pushbutton on my Von Duprin 99 exit device instead of a cylindrical lock?
Yes, but that is the exit trim configuration, not the 5031 cylindrical lock. Simplex 5000 exit trim is listed compatible with Von Duprin 22/22F, 98/98F, 99/99F and XP98/99, plus Sargent 8888, 2828, 3828 and 8810E/8800, Corbin Russwin ED5200/5200A, Precision 21/FL21, Detex 10/F10 and 1001 BP1, Arrow S1250 and S3883F/S3800, Dorex 8500R/8500F and 9500PR/9500FR, dormakaba 9300/F9300, Cal Royal 9800 and 2200, Yale YME2100 and 7100, and QED111/112. Monarch 18R/F18R needs a special K-Hub adapter. The exit device and its latch are not supplied with the trim.
7) Is the Dormakaba Simplex 5031 rated for a fire door?
The Simplex 5000 Series carries a 3-hour UL/ULC fire rating for A label doors. In the exit trim configuration it has to be installed with an existing fire-rated exit device to hold that rating.
8) Can the Simplex 5031 be left unlocked for business hours?
No. The 5031 has no passage function, so every entry requires the code or the key override. If you need to hold a door in passage during open hours and re-secure it after, specify the 504x or 505x instead, which add passage activated from the inside by thumbturn or key. Free egress from the inside is standard on all of them.
9) Can I key the Simplex 5031 into my existing Schlage or Best system?
Yes, across most common systems. Order the B option to take a small format interchangeable core, Best and equivalents in 6 or 7-pin length. 10) Is the Simplex 5031 tough enough for a high traffic exterior door on my property?
It is a Grade 1 commercial lock with vandal resistant metal pushbuttons, weather resistant and wear tested for indoor and outdoor use. The housing and lever are brass or bronze. Because it is fully mechanical there is no battery to fail in cold weather and no battery replacement labor on a fleet of doors.
11) How many user codes can the Simplex 5031 hold, and how do I change the code?
One. The Simplex 5000 Series runs a single access code shared by all users, which is why it suits a mechanical room, a storage door, or a small crew rather than an access-controlled entrance where you audit individuals. On the 503x the code is reprogrammed through the keypad on the interior side without pulling the lock off the door.
