Simplex Mechanical Pushbutton Locks eliminate problems and costs associated with issuing, controlling, and collecting keys and cards.

The Simplex 5000 Series provides exterior access by combination, while allowing free egress. Dormakaba 5051-XS-WL-26D-41 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Simplex 5051 latch into the strike already in my frame, or do I need a longer latch?
Standard latch on the Simplex 5051 throws 1/2 inch. If the opening has settled, the gap is wide, or the strike pocket is deep, there is a 3/4 inch throw latch offered, but only with the 2-3/4 inch backset. Order the 2-3/8 inch backset and you get the 1/2 inch latch, that is the only latch paired with it.
2) What is the minimum stile width for a Simplex 5000 pushbutton lock, and will it go on an aluminum storefront door?
Five inches is the minimum stile recommended for the Simplex 5000 cylindrical lock. Most medium and wide stile aluminum doors clear that; a narrow stile storefront door does not, and forcing it is not an option because the lock body and keypad need the width. On a door that narrow, or on any door already carrying an exit device, look at the exit trim configuration of the same series instead, which mounts to the device rather than boring the stile.
3) Is the Simplex 5051 handed, or does one lock cover both left and right hand doors?
Non-handed. One part number covers left and right hand openings. It comes out of the box assembled for a left-hand door, and swapping it to right hand is done in the field during installation, no extra parts and no separate SKU to order.
4) Can I key a Simplex 5051 into my building's existing Best SFIC or Schlage key system?
Yes, the key override is an order choice and it is how you tie the lock into what you already run. Option B takes a small format interchangeable core, Best and equivalents, 6 or 7 pin. Large format removable core options are C for Corbin Russwin (6 or 7 pin), M for Medeco, ASSA, Yale or Abloy (5 or 6 pin), R for Sargent, and S for Schlage. On all of those the core is not included, so pull one from your own system or order it separately. If you have no house keying to match, XK and XS ship with a dormakaba 1599 6-pin key-in-lever cylinder, XK cut to the dormakaba 90 keyway and XS to the Schlage C keyway.
5) How do I hold the door unlocked during business hours on a Simplex 5051?
That is the passage feature, and it is the reason to buy the 5051 over the non-passage models. Switch it on from the inside with the thumbturn or key and people walk in without entering the code; switch it off and the door is back on combination entry. The thumbturn or key that operates it ships with every passage model, so there is nothing extra to specify.
6) What is the difference between the Simplex 5041 and the 5051 pushbutton lock?
Both are cylindrical Simplex locks with combination entry, key override and the passage feature. The split is where the code gets changed. The 5041 changes its combination from the exterior side; the 5051 changes from the interior, and that interior-change version is the one listed as D.O.D. compliant. If you are specifying for a government or defense facility, or you simply do not want the code changeable by anyone standing outside the door, the 5051 is the one to order.
7) Will the Simplex 5051 cover the prep from the cylindrical lockset I am taking off?
Partly. The lock uses ASA 161 door preparation, the standard commercial cylindrical prep with a 2-1/8 inch cross bore, so the main bore and the latch prep on an existing 161 opening carry over. What it adds is through holes, drilled for the fasteners and the linkage between the outside keypad and the inside chassis, so plan on drilling rather than a straight swap. It mounts on wood or metal doors and a full scale template comes in the box to lay those holes out.
8) Does the Simplex 5051 meet DOD requirements for a controlled area?
It is D.O.D. compliant to 5220.22M as supplemental access control, which is exactly how these get specified: the Simplex handles day-to-day access on top of whatever primary security the space already has, not in place of it. The combination is changed from the interior side, which is the part that satisfies the requirement.
9) Can a Simplex 5000 pushbutton lock go on a fire rated door?
The Simplex 5000 Series carries a 3-hour UL/ULC fire rating for A label doors. Where the opening already has an exit device, that device has to be a fire rated one for the rating to hold.
10) How many user codes does the Simplex 5051 hold, and does it need batteries?
One code, and no batteries. This is a fully mechanical lock, so there is no power to fail, no battery replacement schedule and no wiring. The tradeoff is a single access code shared by everyone who uses the door, with no individual codes and no audit trail. For turnover that works in your favor: when a tenant or a crew leaves, you reprogram the code at the keypad without pulling the lock off the door, instead of rekeying cylinders or collecting cards.
11) Is the Simplex 5051 tough enough for an exterior door in a high traffic building?
It is a Grade 1 lock built on brass or bronze, with vandal resistant metal pushbuttons rather than plastic, and it is weather resistant and wear tested for indoor and outdoor use. Grade 1 is the heaviest of the three ANSI/BHMA duty grades, the one written into commercial and institutional specs. The metal buttons matter more than people expect on an exterior keypad, since that is the part that gets abused first.
12) What comes in the box with a Simplex 5051, and what else do I need to order to finish the job?
You get the lock assembly, the required mounting hardware, a full scale template and the installation manual. The one thing that can be missing is the cylinder: order the key override as B, C, M, R or S and the interchangeable or removable core is not included, so supply it from your own key system or add it to the order. Choose XK or XS instead and the cylinder is in the box. Passage models also include the interior thumbturn or key that switches passage on.
13) What finishes does the Simplex 5051 come in if I need it to match the other openings in the building?
Five finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, and 744 dark bronze with brass accents. Housing and lever are finished together, so the keypad side matches the trim rather than reading as a bolt-on. 626 satin chrome is the usual commercial default and the one most likely to match existing Grade 1 hardware down the corridor.
14) Is the Simplex 5051 lever ADA compliant for a public building entrance?
The lever operates to the Americans with Disabilities Act accessibility standard, so no tight grasping or wrist twisting to get through the door. Worth noting for the code review: the code still has to be pushed on the keypad, which is why the passage feature earns its place on public-facing openings, since it takes the code out of the equation during open hours.
