The rim type 6495 series egress bar provides a strong mechanical latch by utilizing a sintered steel latchbolt with an adjustable jamb mounted roller strike plate. These exit bars are intended for mounting on outward swinging doors to facilitate the safe egress of persons in the facility. 1) Does the Dortronics 6420-S25 egress bar actually latch the door, or is it just a switch bar?
No latch. The 6420-S25 is a dummy bar, meaning there's no latching mechanism inside it at all. It carries two SPDT microswitches and nothing else, so its whole job is signalling request-to-exit or alarm to an access control system while the door is held by something else (a maglock, an electric strike, another lock). If you need the bar itself to hold the door shut, you want the latching version of the family, the 6495, which uses a sintered steel latchbolt against an adjustable jamb mounted roller strike plate.
2) I'm pairing an egress bar with a maglock for request-to-exit. Will the Dortronics 6420-S25 switch handle my circuit?
The two internal switches are momentary P25 type, dual SPDT, rated 5 amps at 24VDC, with immediate response contacts. That covers a standard low voltage REX input on an access control panel and will directly break a 24VDC maglock circuit within that rating. Two separate SPDT sets means you can run one to the REX input and the other to the alarm shunt or the lock power at the same time.
3) Will the Dortronics 6420 egress bar mount on an inswinging door?
No. These rim type egress bars are made for outward swinging doors only, which is what lets the bar and its hardware sit on the push side for egress. On an inswinging opening you need a different device type entirely. Handing itself is not a problem, the bar is field reversible, so you don't specify hand when ordering.
4) My doors are 30 inch and 42 inch, not 36. Can I still use the Dortronics 6400 Series egress bar?
The bar ships sized for a standard 36 inch (3'-0") door. For other widths, order the extra length 48 inch bar and cut it down in the field to suit the opening. That covers anything up to 48 inches wide. The mounting itself is universal adjustable, so it isn't tied to one door prep.
5) How do I get the wiring from the switches in the door across to the frame?
Use the Dortronics 6220 armored door cord. It's an 18 inch armored sheath carrying a 2 foot, 4 conductor, 22 AWG cable with two surface mounted junction boxes, and it transfers the circuit from the bar's microswitches to the door jamb. It's a separate order item, not included with the bar, and with only two SPDT switches to land, four conductors covers the usual REX plus alarm run.
6) Does the Dortronics 6400 egress bar meet ADA and panic hardware requirements?
ADA, yes. The bar releases with a soft push anywhere along the actuating bar, which is what satisfies the ADA criteria cited for the device. The rim type egress bars in the series have been evaluated to ANSI/BHMA A156.3, and the basic UL standard used to investigate this product category is UL 305, panic hardware. Installation is intended to follow NFPA 101. If your AHJ is scheduling listed panic hardware on a fire door, note the 6420-S25 has no latch, so it isn't holding anything closed on its own.
7) I have a pair of doors with no mullion. Will a Dortronics 6400 egress bar secure them?

For a mullion free pair you need a different device type, such as a surface vertical rod device that latches at head and threshold.
8) What's the difference between the Dortronics 6420-S25 and the 6495-S25?
Both carry the same two SPDT switches for a 3'-0" door. The difference is the latch: the 6495-S25 is a rim panic with the mechanical latching mechanism, while the 6420-S25 is a dummy bar with none. Pick the 6495-S25 when the bar is doing the securing, and the 6420-S25 when the door is already secured electrically and the bar is only there to signal exit. There's also a plain 6495, the rim panic mechanical for a 3'-0" door without switches, if you need no signalling at all.
9) Can a Dortronics egress bar go on an aluminum storefront door, or is it only for hollow metal?
Aluminum and glass, wood, and metal doors are all covered. It anchors with the concealed mounting screws supplied, so there's no exposed fastener head on the face of the bar. Storefront installers should note the device is rim type mounted to the door face, not a mortise or concealed rod device, so no stile machining is involved.
10) Can I get the Dortronics 6400 egress bar in dark bronze to match my other storefront hardware?
