DynaLock 5312 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What voltage and amperage does the DynaLock 5312 transformer put out?
The 5312 takes 120 VAC in from a standard wall outlet and puts out 12 VAC, rated at 3 amps maximum. That is the ceiling for whatever you hang off it, so add up the holding current of every lock or strike on the circuit before you commit to it.
2) Do I need a 12 volt or a 24 volt transformer for my maglock?
Match the transformer to the lock's coil. The 5312 is the 12 VAC model in DynaLock's 5300 open transformer family; the same family is built with secondary outputs in 12 or 24 volts, AC or DC, the DC versions using a built-in rectifier bridge. If your maglock or strike calls for 24 VDC, the 5312 is the wrong unit and you want the DC model at that voltage instead.
3) Will a 12 VAC transformer run a DC electric strike or maglock?
No. The 5312 output is alternating current only. Anything that needs filtered or rectified DC, most maglocks and many strikes, has to be fed from a DC source. DynaLock builds the 5300 open transformers with a built-in rectifier bridge on the DC models, so that is the version to specify for a DC device.
4) How does the DynaLock 5312 transformer connect to the lock wiring?
Screw terminals on the secondary side handle the field hook-up, so the low voltage run lands directly on the unit with no plug or pigtail to splice. The primary side is a plug-in, meaning it goes straight into a 120 VAC convenience outlet rather than being hardwired into a junction box.
5) Is a plug-in transformer the right choice, or do I need a hardwired access control power supply?
A plug-in unit like the 5312 is meant for the case where a standard 120 VAC convenience outlet sits close to the device being powered and you want low voltage power cheaply. Where you have no nearby outlet, need a hardwired feed, or need battery standby, fire alarm interface, or multiple regulated and fused outputs, an open plug-in transformer will not do that job and you want an enclosed access control power supply instead.
6) Can I run more than one electric strike off a single DynaLock 5312?
Only within the 3 amp ceiling. The 5312 is rated at 3 amps maximum on its 12 VAC secondary, so total the inrush and holding current of every device you intend to land on those screw terminals. Two low-draw strikes usually fit; several maglocks generally will not, and you split them across separate supplies.
7) Is the DynaLock 5312 transformer meant for commercial door hardware or residential use?
It is a commercial-duty part, sold as electronic access control power for door hardware. Typical use is powering electric strikes, maglocks, or similar low voltage door devices in a commercial opening, not as a general purpose consumer adapter.
8) Is the DynaLock 5312 an enclosed transformer or an open one?
Open construction. The 5300 units are open transformers, which is part of why they are the economical option, but it also means the unit is not intended to sit exposed in a wet, public, or abuse-prone location. Plan on it living at the outlet in a secured or concealed spot.
