When the bathroom is not occupied all doors are normally closed and unlocked. All switch indicators are not illuminated. Upon entering the bathroom from one of the rooms the occupant presses the inside pushbutton switch to lock all doors. All doors must be closed for locking to occur. Interior and exterior indicators will illuminate red to indicate bathroom is occupied and doors are locked. To unlock doors and exit, occupant presses inside pushbutton again. All indicators will extinguish and all doors will unlock. Depressing outside emergency pushbutton switches, located above or adjacent to each door, will unlock all doors. Outside pushbutton, if used, must be pushed again to reset system to normal use. When connected to a fire panel system all doors will unlock during a fire emergency

1) How does a communicating bathroom lock system actually work for the occupant?
With the bathroom empty, all three doors sit closed and unlocked and none of the indicators are lit. The occupant walks in, closes the door, and presses the inside pushbutton, which locks all three doors at once. Interior and exterior indicators light red so the adjacent rooms can see the bathroom is occupied. Pressing the inside button again drops all the locks and extinguishes the indicators. 2) Do I need the 8500-3 or a two-door version? I have a bathroom shared between two bedrooms.
The 8500-3 is built for a bathroom with three doors, and it is packaged accordingly: three maglocks and three exterior emergency pushbuttons. A bathroom shared by two adjacent rooms only needs two openings controlled, so ordering the 8500-3 leaves you with a spare lock and button you paid for and a logic board wired for three doors. Ask for the two-door configuration in the DynaLock 8500 Series instead.
3) Can someone get locked in, or locked out, if the system fails or there is an emergency?
No. Emergency pushbuttons mount above or adjacent to each door on the outside, and pressing any one of them releases all three doors. That outside button is maintained, so once it has been used it has to be pressed again to reset the system back to normal operation. The system also accepts a connection to the building fire panel, and on a fire alarm every door unlocks. Because these are magnetic locks running on 24VDC, loss of power also releases the doors.
4) Can I get the same privacy interlock using a REX kit in the existing mortise locks instead of the DynaLock 8500-3?
They solve different problems.
