1) How do I pick the right Eaton FH heater element for my motor?
Selection is by the motor's nameplate full load amps, not by horsepower. The Eaton A200/B100 heater elements are ordered by motor FLA, and the range runs from the FH73 at 9A up through the FH88 at 85-92A, with steps in between such as FH71 at 18.9A, FH72 at 19.0-20.8A, FH74 at 23.0-25.2A, FH80 at 41.6-56.3A, FH82 at 51-55A, FH83 at 56-61A, FH86 at 74-78A and FH87 at 79-84A. Read the FLA off the motor nameplate and match it to the band.
2) How many heater elements do I need to order for a three-phase starter?
Three. The A200 heater elements are for 3-phase only applications, and a three-phase motor circuit takes one heater per phase, so order three of the same catalog number for a single starter. Buying one will leave two poles unprotected.
3) Will these heaters fit my Eaton A200 size 1 or size 2 starter?
No. These heater elements are specified for A200 starter sizes 3 and 4. A size 1 or size 2 A200 starter uses a different heater table, so ordering from this range will get you the wrong element.
4) My motor nameplate reads 60 FLA. Which Eaton FH heater do I order?
The FH83 covers 56-61A, so a 60A nameplate lands in that band. Just above it, FH86 picks up at 74-78A and FH87 covers 79-84A. Always size from the nameplate FLA of the specific motor, not from a breaker or wire size.
5) Do these work with Type A and Type B overload relays?
Yes. The A200/B100 heater coils are built to work with both Type A and Type B overload relays, which is what you will find in A200 and B100 starter lines. The design is NEMA, so the element seats in the relay the same way the original did.
6) Are these heaters sized for a 1.15 service factor motor?
Yes. Eaton rates these heater coils to protect a motor with a 40 degree C rise and a 1.15 service factor. If your motor has a 1.0 service factor or a different temperature rise, the heater has to be sized down from the standard table rather than picked straight off the FLA band.
7) What does the 78-84A Non-Comp rating on this Eaton heater mean?
It is the non-compensated full load current range the element covers, 78-84A. Non-compensated means the trip point is not adjusted for ambient temperature differences between the starter enclosure and the motor location. If your starter sits in a hot room and the motor does not (or the reverse), that difference will shift the trip point.
8) Can I use these as replacement heater coils in an existing motor control center?
That is the usual use. These are direct replacement heater elements for A200 series size 3 and 4 starters in panelboards and motor control centers. Pull the old element, read its catalog number or re-check the motor nameplate FLA, and order three of the matching FH number.
