Eaton 14W33 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is a NEMA 5-20P plug going to work in my standard 15-amp household receptacle?
No. The 14W33 is a NEMA 5-20P configuration, which has the T-slot horizontal blade and only mates with a 20A 125V receptacle (5-20R) or a T-slot duplex. A straight 5-15R will not accept it. If you need a 15A 125V plug body instead, the Pass & Seymour PS5266X is a 15A 125V spec-grade cord plug.
2) Can this plug be used outdoors or in a washdown area?
Yes. It is rated IP67 and listed for damp and wet locations, with a Santoprene thermoplastic elastomer body that holds up to hose-down and outdoor exposure. Contacts are nickel plated brass for corrosion resistance. The seal only performs if the cord diameter falls in the 0.30 to 0.65 inch grip range.
3) Can I use a 15A plug in place of the Eaton 14W33 on a 20A cord set?
Not if the equipment or cord requires a 20 amp cord end. The 14W33 is rated 20A at 125V in the NEMA 5-20P configuration, which has the T-slot compatible blade. The Pass & Seymour PS5266X is a 15A 125V extra-hard use spec grade plug with a nylon housing and white face, and the Bryant 8266T is a NEMA 5-15P hospital grade plug; both are 15 amp devices and will not satisfy a 20 amp 5-20P requirement.
4) What should I use instead if the equipment is 250V rather than 125V?
The Eaton 14W33 is rated 125V only and will not serve a 250V circuit. For a 250V two-pole three-wire cord end, the Leviton 5666-C is an industrial grade straight blade plug rated 250 volt single phase, and the Leviton 931-E is a commercial grade 3-wire 2-pole straight blade plug rated 250V AC at 30/50 amp for the heavier loads.
5) What is a comparable 20A 125V straight blade plug if a watertight body is not needed?
The Eaton 14W33 is a 20A, 125V straight blade plug with an IP67 watertight rating and a Santoprene thermoplastic elastomer face and body, which is what you want on a wet or washdown cord set. If the cord terminates in a dry indoor location, the Pass & Seymour EHU angled straight blade plug is also rated 20A 125V and uses an angled body rather than a straight body, which lays the cord flat against the wall instead of projecting straight out.
6) How many conductors do I land on the Eaton 14W33, and is it grounded?
Three conductors: hot, neutral, and equipment ground. It is a two-pole, three-wire grounding device, so a two-conductor ungrounded cord is not a legal termination here. All three land on screw terminals.
7) Straight body or angled plug for a tight wall receptacle?
The Eaton 14W33 is a straight body, straight blade plug, so the cord exits in line with the blades and needs clearance behind it. Where equipment sits close to the wall and you want the cord to run flat, an angled body is the better choice: Pass & Seymour makes an EHU angled straight blade plug in 20A 125V, and the Bryant 8395T is an angle plug in 5-20P as well.
8) Is the Eaton 14W33 acceptable for patient-care areas in a hospital?
It is an industrial watertight device, not a hospital grade plug. Hospital grade carries its own listing and the green dot. If that is what your spec calls for, the Bryant 8395T is a hospital grade 5-20P angle plug, and the Bryant 8666TSP is a watertight hospital grade plug in N6-15P.
9) Is there another watertight plug option if my receptacle is 250V two-pole?
The Eaton 14W33 is watertight and IP67 rated but is a 125V NEMA 5-20P device. For a watertight cord end on a 250V 15 amp opening, the Bryant 8666TSP is a watertight hospital grade plug in the N6-15P configuration. Confirm the mating receptacle configuration before ordering, since 5-20P and 6-15P blades are not interchangeable.
10) How big is this plug body, and will it clear a recessed receptacle box?
The Eaton 14W33 measures 3.44 in high by 1.81 in wide by 1.81 in deep. That is a full-size industrial body, so check clearance in recessed or in-use covers before committing to it.
11) Does this plug come individually packaged for counter stock?
It ships bulk, not carded, which is how most shops buy them for van or crib stock. The yellow Santoprene body makes it easy to pick out of a bin and easy to spot on a jobsite floor.
