1) Is the plain finish on this 4Dimension channel OK for outdoor or damp installs?
No. Plain finish means bare steel with no galvanizing or paint, so it is for dry interior use only. Outdoors, in parking structures, in mechanical rooms with condensation, or anywhere washdown occurs, specify a pre-galvanized or hot dip galvanized version of the same 4D21 profile instead. The steel substrate is the same; only the coating changes.
2) Will standard strut nuts and fittings fit the B-Line 4D21 channel?
The 4D21 is a 1-5/8 inch class profile at 2.12 inches overall width and 1.06 inches deep, which is the shallow half-height version of the standard strut section. Channel nuts, spring nuts, and clamps sized for the 1-5/8 inch strut family engage its slot. Fittings that rely on the full 1-5/8 inch channel depth, such as some deep post bases and splice plates, will not seat correctly in a 1.06 inch deep section, so match fittings to the shallow profile.
3) What does the SH in 4D21SH mean for the hole pattern?
SH is the slotted hole pattern punched through the back of the channel, rather than a solid, unpunched back. That gives you bolt-through points along the run for hanger rods, beam clamps, and fastening to structure without drilling on site. If you need an unbroken back, for example for a continuous seal or a cleaner appearance, order the solid-back version of the 4D21 profile instead.
