B-LINE 421 HC – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What are the outside dimensions of the Eaton B-Line 421 HC CT enclosure?
The B-Line 421 HC current transformer cabinet measures 48 inches high, 24 inches wide and 12 inches deep. Lay that out on the wall before you order: at 12 inches deep it stands well off the surface, so check clearance against any adjacent gear, conduit runs or walkway space required in front of the meter position.
2) Can the B-Line 421 HC CT enclosure be mounted outdoors?
It is a Type 3 enclosure, which is the outdoor rating for rain, sleet and windblown dust, so an exterior wall at the service entrance is its normal home. Type 3 is not a washdown or submersion rating, so do not use it where it will be hosed down directly or where it can be flooded.
3) Is the 421 HC a ring type or ringless CT cabinet?
Ring type. The utility's meter socket arrangement dictates this, and it is not something you can change in the field, so confirm with the serving utility which style they will accept on the job before ordering. If they specify ringless, this is the wrong cabinet.
4) How heavy is the 421 HC CT cabinet, and is it a one-man install?
128 pounds. That is a two-person lift, and the mounting substrate has to carry it: on masonry use anchors rated for the load, and on stud wall hit framing or add blocking rather than relying on drywall anchors. Plan the hoist before the cabinet is on site.
5) What exactly is a CT cabinet like the B-Line 421 HC used for?
It houses the current transformers on a service too large to meter directly, ahead of the meter socket. The utility runs the service conductors through the CTs inside this box and takes the metering leads out to the meter. It is not a panelboard, a disconnect or a junction box, and it carries no overcurrent protection of its own.
6) What is the 421 HC enclosure made of and how is it finished?
Galvanized steel body with ANSI 61 gray paint over it. The galvanizing is the corrosion barrier and the paint is the finish coat, which is why it holds up on an exterior service wall. ANSI 61 is the standard gray used across most switchgear and panel lineups, so it matches adjacent equipment without repainting.
