1) What are the outside dimensions of the Eaton B-Line 420 HC CT enclosure?
The 420 HC current transformer cabinet measures 48 inches high, 24 inches wide, and 13 inches deep. Lay that out on the wall before you set anchors, and account for the meter socket or trough it lands next to so the conduit run between them is straight.
2) Can this B-Line CT cabinet be mounted outdoors?
It is built as a Type 3 enclosure, which is the outdoor rating for rain, sleet, windblown dust and external ice formation. Galvanized steel with ANSI 61 paint is the standard exterior service-entrance finish. It is not a washdown or submersion enclosure, so if the location gets hosed down or sees hose-directed water you want a Type 4 or 4X instead.
3) What does ring feed type mean on a CT cabinet, and is that what my utility wants?
Ring feed refers to how the cabinet is arranged for the utility's metering connection, and the 420 HC is the ring version rather than a ringless one. Utilities specify one or the other and they are not interchangeable at inspection, so pull the serving utility's approved meter equipment list and confirm they call for ring before you order. Ordering the wrong feed type is the most common reason a CT cabinet gets rejected at the meter release.
4) Is the 420 HC a meter socket or a separate current transformer cabinet?
It is a CT cabinet, the box that houses the current transformers on a CT-metered service. The meter socket is a separate device and is not part of this enclosure. On a typical install the cabinet sits in the service conductors ahead of the main, with the CT secondary leads run in a dedicated conduit over to the utility meter.
5) How heavy is the 420 HC CT cabinet and can one person hang it?
It weighs 128 pounds empty. That is a two-man lift at minimum, and on a 48 inch tall box most crews will set a pair of unistrut rails or lag directly into blocking rather than hanging it off drywall anchors. Add the weight of the CTs and conductors once it is loaded.
6) What finish does the Eaton B-Line 420 HC come in and will it hold up on an exterior wall?
Galvanized steel under ANSI 61 gray paint. The galvanizing is the corrosion barrier and the paint is the topcoat, which is the normal combination for exterior service equipment. Any field cuts or knockouts you make break that barrier, so touch them up with a zinc-rich cold galvanizing compound before you close the job out.
7) Will a 24 by 48 inch CT cabinet fit between studs or in a tight electrical room?
At 24 inches wide and 13 inches deep it will not sit between standard framing, it is a surface-mount box. The 13 inch depth is the number to watch in a narrow electrical room since it adds to whatever working clearance your inspector requires in front of the equipment.
