B-LINE 664 HC NK – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can a NEMA 1 junction box like the B-Line 664 HC NK be used outdoors or in a washdown area?
No. The 664 HC NK carries a NEMA Type 1 rating, which is indoor use only, for protection against incidental contact and falling dirt. It offers no protection against rain, hose-down, dust ingress or oil. For a wet or outdoor location you need a NEMA 3R, 4 or 4X enclosure instead, not this one.
2) What are the actual box dimensions on the B-Line 664 HC NK junction box?
It measures 6 inches high, 6 inches wide and 4 inches deep, so the 664 designation reads as 6 x 6 x 4. That 4 inch depth is what decides whether your wire bending space and device depth will fit behind a hinged cover, so check your deepest component plus the cover swing clearance.
3) Does this B-Line junction box come with knockouts for conduit?
No knockouts. The 664 HC NK is the NK (no knockout) version, so all four sides and the back are blank steel and you punch or hole-saw your own conduit entries where you want them. If you would rather have factory entries, you need a knockout version of the box rather than the NK.
4) How does the 664 HC NK mount to a wall, and does it hang off the back or the sides?
It is a surface mount box with thru holes in the back pan, so it screws flat to a wall, panel or strut through the interior of the enclosure. There are no external mounting feet, which means your fasteners land inside the box and you should plan wire routing around them. At 3.2 pounds empty it does not need heavy anchors for drywall with proper toggles.
5) Is the cover on this B-Line box hinged or screw-on, and can it be taken off entirely?
Both, in effect. The cover is hinged for one-hand access during service, and it is also removable if you need the box fully open for rough-in or to bench-wire it. It uses a recessed pull ring and a friction dimple to hold closed, so there is no latch or lock to key.
6) What gauge steel and finish is the B-Line 664 HC NK, and will it match other gray enclosures in my panel room?
16 gauge carbon steel, painted ANSI 61 gray. ANSI 61 gray is the standard industrial enclosure color, so it lines up visually with most painted steel panels and wireways already on the wall. For a corrosive or damp environment, painted carbon steel is not the right material choice, look at stainless instead.
7) Is the B-Line 664 HC NK junction box UL listed for a commercial inspection?
It is built to UL 50, the standard for enclosures for electrical equipment, and is made in the US. That plus the Type 1 rating is what an inspector will look for on an indoor surface-mounted pull or splice box.
8) What is the correct part number to order this 6x6x4 hinged B-Line junction box?
Order it as Eaton B-Line 664 HC NK. The 664 gives the 6 x 6 x 4 size, HC is the hinged cover, and NK means no knockouts. Drop the NK and you are ordering a different box with factory conduit entries.
