B-LINE 181810 RTSC – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can the B-Line 181810 RTSC junction box be mounted outdoors?
Yes, within the limits of a NEMA 3R rating. The 181810 RTSC carries a 3R rating, which covers outdoor use against falling rain, sleet and snow, and it includes a rain hood over the cover. It is not a washdown or hosedown enclosure, so if the location sees direct spray or blowing rain, step up to a 4 or 4X box instead.
2) What are the actual box dimensions on the B-Line 181810 RTSC enclosure?
18 inches high, 18 inches wide, and 10 inches deep. That 10 inch depth is the number to check first: it is generous for a pull or junction box, so gutter space for large conductor bends is usually not the constraint, but it does project 10 inches off the wall on a surface mount.
3) Does this B-Line junction box come with conduit knockouts already punched?
There are 9 knockouts in the bottom of the enclosure. Sides, back and cover come solid, so any additional entries have to be field punched. If you need top entries, keep in mind this is a 3R box and top penetrations compromise the rain protection.
4) How is this Eaton B-Line enclosure fastened to the wall?
Surface mount, using embossed thru holes in the back of the box. The embossed pattern keeps the mounting fasteners from breaking the enclosure seal plane. Fasteners and any standoff or strut hardware are not part of the box, so pick anchors for your substrate. At 23.1 lb empty, plus conductors, anchor into structure rather than drywall alone.
5) Is the B-Line 181810 RTSC enclosure UL listed for an inspected commercial job?
It is built to UL 50, the standard for enclosures for electrical equipment, and rated NEMA 3R. That is the pairing an inspector looks for on an outdoor-rated pull or junction box. It is also made in the US, which matters on Buy American funded work.
6) How does the cover come off on the RTSC enclosure, and is that a problem for frequent access?
It is a screw cover, flanged, with plated screws. You back out the screws and lift the cover off. Fine for a pull box or a junction you open rarely. If a technician needs in weekly, a hinged door enclosure is the better buy since a loose screw cover has to be set down somewhere on a ladder.
7) What gauge steel is the 181810 RTSC box, and will it rust outdoors?
16 gauge carbon steel with a painted finish in ANSI 61 grey. Painted carbon steel holds up in normal outdoor and industrial exposure, but it is not stainless, so coastal, chemical or wash environments will eventually attack any scratch or drilled edge. Touch up field-punched holes, or specify a stainless or non-metallic enclosure for corrosive sites.
8) Does the 181810 RTSC box include a back panel for mounting devices?
No back panel is included. The RTSC is a screw cover junction and pull box, not a control enclosure, and no interior panel is part of it. If you are mounting relays, terminal blocks or a controller, order a panel separately or choose a control enclosure style instead.
