Yes, within the limits of a NEMA 3R rating. The 444 RTSC carries a 3R rating, which means it protects against falling rain, sleet and snow and external ice formation, and it includes a rain hood over the cover. It is not a washdown or hosedown enclosure, so keep it off surfaces that get pressure sprayed and out of standing water. For direct-spray or dust-tight duty you want a 4 or 4X enclosure instead.

It is a 4 x 4 x 4 inch box: 4 inch height, 4 inch width, and 4 inch length/depth. That cube shape gives you the same depth as face opening, which is usually enough room for a few wirenutted splices or a small relay, but it is tight for anything with a mounting plate.

There are 2 knockouts in the bottom of the box and no others. Everything else is blank steel, so if you need side or top entries you will be punching them yourself. Note that drilling the top of a 3R enclosure defeats the rain protection, so keep penetrations on the bottom or use rain-tight fittings on the sides.

It is a surface-mount enclosure with embossed thru holes in the back pan, so you fasten through the inside of the box into the wall or strut. You do have to take the cover off to get at the holes. The embossed feature raises the hole area so the fastener seats without breaking the drip path of the enclosure.

Painted carbon steel is standard for outdoor 3R service, but it is not stainless, so in coastal, chemical, or wash-area environments the paint is the only corrosion barrier and scratches will rust. Touch up any field-drilled holes.
