B-LINE 884 RTSC – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can the B-Line 884 RTSC junction box be mounted outdoors?
Yes. The Eaton B-Line 884 RTSC is a NEMA 3R enclosure, which is the rating for outdoor use against falling rain and ice formation. It has a rain hood over the cover and plated screws to handle the weather. NEMA 3R is not a washdown or hosedown rating, so if the box will see direct spray or heavy dust, step up to a 4 or 4X enclosure instead.
2) What are the actual box dimensions on the B-Line 884 RTSC enclosure?
It measures 8 inches high, 8 inches wide, and 4 inches deep. That 4 inch depth is the number to check first, since it sets how much room you have behind the cover for splices, terminal blocks or a small contactor.
3) Does the 884 RTSC junction box come with knockouts, or do I have to punch my own holes?
There are 4 knockouts in the bottom of the box. Entries from the bottom keep water out of a 3R enclosure, which is why the knockouts are placed there. If you need side or top entries you will have to punch them yourself, and any top penetration has to be sealed with a raintight fitting to keep the 3R rating intact.
4) How does the B-Line 884 RTSC mount to a wall?
It is a surface mount box with embossed thru holes in the back panel area, so it bolts flat to a wall, strut, or pole bracket. The embossed holes stand the fastener heads off the mounting surface, which keeps the seal plane intact. Mounting hardware is not part of the box, so pick fasteners for whatever you are attaching to. At 4.7 pounds empty, two people are not needed to hang it.
5) Is the 884 RTSC a hinged door box or a screw cover box?
Screw cover, flanged. The cover lifts off entirely once you back out the plated screws, which is fine for a junction or pull box you open rarely. If the enclosure will be opened routinely for testing or resets, a hinged-door continuous enclosure is the better choice, because a loose screw cover on a ladder is how gaskets get pinched and covers get dropped.
6) What is the 884 RTSC made of, and will it hold up outside without rusting?
The shell is 16 gauge carbon steel with a painted ANSI 61 gray finish, and the cover screws are plated. Painted carbon steel is standard for outdoor 3R work in normal environments. In coastal, chemical, or wash-down areas, specify a stainless or non-metallic 4X enclosure instead, since paint over carbon steel will eventually give up in a salt or corrosive atmosphere.
7) Is the B-Line 884 RTSC enclosure UL listed for an inspected commercial job?
It carries UL 50, the standard covering enclosures for electrical equipment, and it is made in the US. For an AHJ signing off a junction or pull box, the UL 50 listing plus the NEMA 3R type designation are the two items usually asked for.
8) Does the 884 RTSC come with a back panel for mounting components?
No panel is included with this one. It is configured as a junction and pull box, carbon steel with a screw-on flanged cover and four bottom knockouts. If you intend to mount a relay, terminal strips, or a small contactor inside, order a separate B-Line back panel sized for an 8 x 8 enclosure, and remember you only have 4 inches of depth to work in.
