1) Can the B-Line 12124 RTSC junction box be mounted outdoors?
Yes. The 12124 RTSC carries a NEMA 3R rating, which covers outdoor use against falling rain, sleet and external ice formation. It adds a rain hood over the cover and uses plated screws to hold up outside. It is not a washdown or hosedown enclosure, so keep it out of locations subject to direct pressure spray.
2) What are the actual box dimensions on the B-Line 12124 RTSC enclosure?
12 inches high, 12 inches wide and 4 inches deep, which is where the 12124 designation comes from. That 4 inch depth is the number to check first: it sets your wire bending room and whether a mounted device or terminal block will clear the screw cover.
3) Does this B-Line junction box come with knockouts already punched?
Five knockouts are provided in the bottom of the box only. The top, sides and back come blank, which is correct practice for a 3R enclosure since penetrations above the wet line would compromise the rain rating. If you need side or top entry, you will be drilling and adding rated hubs yourself.
4) How does the 12124 RTSC mount to a wall?
Surface mount, using embossed thru holes in the back of the box. The embossing stands the hole off the mounting surface so water does not track in behind the fastener. Mounting screws or anchors are not part of the enclosure, so pick fasteners to suit your substrate, and remember the box is 8.5 lb empty before conductors and devices.
5) Is the cover hinged or does it screw on?
It is a screw cover, flanged, not hinged. That suits a pull or splice box you open rarely. If your crew needs to get in regularly for testing or terminations, a hinged door enclosure is the better call, because on a screw cover you are handling loose screws on a ladder every time.
6) What is this B-Line enclosure made of and how heavy is the steel?
Carbon steel at 16 gauge, painted ANSI 61 grey. Sixteen gauge is the usual commercial weight for a box this size, stiff enough that the 12 by 12 face will not oil-can when you drill it. Painted carbon steel is a coastal or chemical exposure consideration; in those environments stainless is the material to specify instead.
7) Will the ANSI 61 grey finish match the other enclosures on my site?
ANSI 61 grey is the standard grey used across most industrial electrical gear, so a 12124 RTSC will read the same as switchgear, control panels and other B-Line enclosures finished to that spec. For a facility standardizing on one look across outdoor pull boxes, that is the finish to hold to.
