B-LINE 12128 RTSC – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the B-Line 12128 RTSC junction box be mounted outdoors?
Yes, the 12128 RTSC is a NEMA 3R enclosure, so it is built for outdoor use where falling rain, sleet and snow are the concern. It includes a rain hood over the cover seam and plated screws to resist corrosion at the fasteners. NEMA 3R does not cover hosedown or windblown dust, so for washdown areas step up to a 4 or 4X enclosure instead.
2) What are the actual box dimensions on the B-Line 12128 RTSC enclosure?
12 inches height, 12 inches width and 8 inches length/depth, which is where the 12128 designation comes from. At 8 inches deep it gives room for terminal blocks or a small DIN rail behind the cover rather than just splices.
3) Does the 12128 RTSC box come with knockouts already punched?
There are 5 knockouts in the bottom of the box. Sides, top and back are blank, which is correct for a 3R rating, entries belong on the bottom so water is not driven in. If you need side or top entry you will be punching it yourself and adding a rated hub fitting.
4) Is this junction box UL listed for a commercial inspection?
The 12128 RTSC carries UL 50, the standard covering enclosures for electrical equipment. Paired with the NEMA 3R construction, that is what an inspector looks for on an outdoor surface-mounted pull or junction box. It is also made in the US, which matters on Buy American public work.
5) Does this B-Line enclosure have a hinged door or a screw-on cover?
It is a screw cover, not hinged. The cover is a flanged design fastened with plated screws, which suits an enclosure you open occasionally for maintenance. If electricians will be in it daily, a hinged-door enclosure is the better choice, because a screw cover means handling loose screws on a ladder.
6) How does this B-Line junction box attach to a wall?
Surface mounting, using embossed thru holes in the back of the box. The embossed holes keep the fastener heads off the mounting surface and maintain the raintight integrity of the back panel. Anchors or lags are sized to your substrate and are not supplied with the box.
7) What gauge steel is the B-Line 12128 RTSC made from, and how heavy is it?
16 gauge carbon steel, weighing 11.5 lb empty. That is the usual weight class for a 12 x 12 x 8 steel enclosure, so two lag screws into solid backing handle it, but a single drywall anchor will not.
8) Should I order a steel 3R box or a non-metallic enclosure for a coastal or chemical site?
This one is painted carbon steel with a 3R rating, fine for general outdoor rain and snow exposure. On salt-air coastal or chemically aggressive sites, painted steel will rust out at screw holes and punched knockouts, so a stainless or non-metallic 4X enclosure is the right call there. For a standard outdoor pull point, 16 gauge steel takes conduit loading and abuse better than plastic.
9) What color is the B-Line RTSC enclosure, and will it match existing gear?
Painted ANSI 61 grey, the standard switchgear and panel grey, so it lines up visually with most existing industrial and utility equipment on a wall or rooftop. Carbon steel under the paint, so scratches should be touched up to keep corrosion off outdoor installs.
