1) Can the Eaton B-Line 864 RTSC junction box be mounted outdoors?
Yes. The 864 RTSC is a NEMA 3R enclosure, which means it is built for outdoor use against falling rain and sleet. It carries a rain hood over the cover seam and plated screws for corrosion resistance, and it is UL 50 listed. NEMA 3R does not mean watertight or dust-tight, so for washdown or heavy dust areas you want a 4 or 4X box instead.
2) What are the actual box dimensions of the B-Line 864 RTSC enclosure?
It measures 8 inches high, 6 inches wide and 4 inches deep, and weighs 3.8 lb. The 4 inch depth is the number to check first, since that is what limits how much gutter space you have behind terminal blocks or a small contactor once the cover screws down.
3) Does this B-Line 8x6x4 screw cover box come with knockouts already punched?
There are 3 knockouts in the bottom of the box. The sides, back and cover ship solid, so any conduit entry other than bottom feed has to be punched in the field. Bottom-only knockouts are normal on a 3R box, since penetrations in the top would defeat the rain rating.
4) How does the 864 RTSC mount to a wall or strut?
It is a surface mount box with embossed thru holes in the back panel area, so it bolts straight to a wall, a post or a run of strut. Mounting fasteners and anchors are not part of the box, so pick them to suit the substrate.
5) Is the cover hinged or does it screw on?
Screw cover, not hinged. It is a flanged cover held by plated screws, which is fine for a junction or pull point you rarely open. If the box houses controls someone has to get into regularly, a hinged door enclosure saves the aggravation of loose screws at height.
6) What is the B-Line 864 RTSC made of, and will it hold up outside?
The shell is 16 gauge carbon steel with a painted ANSI 61 gray finish, made in the US. Painted steel handles normal outdoor weather, but it is not stainless: in coastal, chemical or washdown environments the paint is the weak point and a stainless or non-metallic 4X enclosure is the better call.
7) Will the 864 RTSC match the gray on the rest of my outdoor enclosures?
The finish is ANSI 61 gray, the standard light gray used across most industrial enclosure and switchgear lines, so it blends with existing panels on a facility without looking like a patch job.
