B-LINE 1084 RTSC – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the Eaton B-Line 1084 RTSC junction box be used outdoors?
Yes, for outdoor use where rain and sleet are the concern. The 1084 RTSC carries a NEMA 3R rating and includes a rain hood over the cover, so it is suited to exterior walls, rooftops, and unheated spaces. NEMA 3R protects against falling rain, sleet and external ice formation, not hosedown or washdown. If your spec calls for a 4 or 4X washdown enclosure, this is not the right box.
2) What size is the B-Line 1084 RTSC screw cover enclosure?
It measures 10 inches high, 8 inches wide, and 4 inches deep. That is a small single-door body, the depth being the number that usually decides whether your conductors and splices fit, so figure your bending space off the 4 inch dimension.
3) Does the 1084 RTSC come with knockouts or do I have to drill it?
Four knockouts are provided in the bottom of the box. There are no knockouts elsewhere, so any side, top, or back entry has to be field-punched. On a NEMA 3R install, bottom entry is what you want anyway, and punching the top of a rain-rated box will compromise the rating.
4) Is this junction box UL listed for my inspector?
The enclosure is built to UL 50, the standard for enclosures for electrical equipment, and it carries a NEMA 3R environmental rating. Those are the two lines an inspector or a submittal reviewer will look for on a rain-tight junction box.
5) How does the cover attach, and can I get into it quickly for service?
The cover is a flanged screw cover with plated screws. You need a driver to open it, which is fine for a splice or pull box that is rarely accessed but slower than a hinged or clamped door if you expect frequent entry. The plated screws are there to resist corrosion on outdoor openings.
6) How is this B-Line junction box mounted to a wall?
Surface mount, using embossed thru holes in the back of the enclosure. The embossed holes keep the fastener seats off the mounting surface so water does not track in behind the box. Fasteners and anchors are not part of the box, so pick them for your substrate, whether that is block, stud, or strut.
7) What is the 1084 RTSC made of, and will it hold up on an exterior wall?
16 gauge carbon steel with a painted finish in ANSI 61 grey. That is the standard grey used on industrial control gear, so it blends with panels and disconnects already on the wall. Carbon steel painted, not stainless, so in coastal or chemically aggressive air expect to maintain the paint or specify a stainless or non-metallic enclosure instead.
8) How much does the 1084 RTSC weigh for a one-person install?
