B-LINE 1086 RTSC – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can the B-Line 1086 RTSC enclosure be mounted outdoors?
Yes, for outdoor use where falling rain is the concern. The 1086 RTSC carries a NEMA 3R rating and includes a rain hood over the cover, so it handles rain, sleet and snow on an exterior wall. It is not a washdown or hosedown box, and 3R does not cover windblown dust or liquid spray, so if you need that step up you want a Type 4 enclosure instead.
2) What are the box dimensions on the B-Line 1086 RTSC junction box?
10 inches height, 8 inches width and 6 inches deep. That 6 inch depth is what matters most when you are laying out gutter fill or stacking terminal blocks behind the cover, and the 8 x 10 face sets your wall footprint.
3) Does this B-Line enclosure come with knockouts already, or do I have to drill it?
Four knockouts are provided in the bottom of the box, which is the correct entry side for a 3R enclosure so water drains away from the conduit run. There are no factory openings on the top, sides or back, so any additional entries are yours to punch in the field.
4) Is this junction box UL listed, and what gauge steel is it?
The 1086 RTSC is built to UL 50 and is fabricated from 16 gauge carbon steel. UL 50 is the enclosure construction standard inspectors look for on a junction box, and 16 gauge is the usual commercial wall thickness for a box this size, so it stays rigid when you are pulling conductors through it.
5) How is the 1086 RTSC cover secured, and can I get into it quickly for service?
It is a screw cover with a flanged edge and plated screws. You need a driver to open it, which is fine for a box you enter occasionally but slow if you are in and out daily. For frequent access, a hinged or clamp cover enclosure is the better choice. The plated screws are the detail that matters outdoors, since plain hardware seizes with rust after a couple of seasons.
6) How does the B-Line 1086 RTSC mount to a wall?
Surface mount, using embossed thru holes in the back of the box. The embossing keeps the fastener seating off the flat back wall so the mounting points do not compromise the rain-tight rating. At 6.7 lb empty it hangs off standard anchors in masonry or unistrut without extra support.
7) Will the B-Line 1086 RTSC match the grey enclosures already on my facility exterior?
It is painted ANSI 61 Grey, the standard light grey used on most commercial electrical enclosures, so it lines up with existing gear on a wall without repainting. Keep in mind it is painted carbon steel, not stainless or aluminum, so touch up any field-drilled holes or scratches to keep rust out.
8) Is the 1086 RTSC suitable for indoor use too, or only outside?
It works indoors without issue. A 3R enclosure exceeds what an indoor dry location needs, and the rain hood is the only cosmetic downside. Where it does not belong is indoor oily, dusty or washdown areas, which call for a Type 12 or Type 4X box instead.
9) Is this a single door enclosure or a multi-door cabinet?
Single door, small format, with one screw-on flanged cover over the 8 by 10 inch face. If you need separate compartments or a door you can open with the box still energized behind an inner panel, this is not that enclosure.
