1) Can the B-Line 12104 RTSC junction box be mounted outdoors?
Yes. The 12104 RTSC is a NEMA Type 3R enclosure with a rain hood over the cover, so it's built for outdoor walls where it will see rain, sleet and snow. Type 3R protects against falling rain and ice formation; it is not a washdown or hosedown rating, so don't use it where it will be sprayed directly or submerged.
2) What are the actual box dimensions on the B-Line 12104 RTSC enclosure?
12 inches high, 10 inches wide, and 4 inches deep. That 4 inch depth is the number to check first if you're stacking terminal blocks or need bending room for larger conductors behind the cover.
3) Does this B-Line enclosure come with conduit knockouts, or do I have to punch my own?
There are 5 knockouts in the bottom of the box only. The top, sides and back come blank, which is intentional on a 3R enclosure since bottom entry keeps water out of the wiring space. If you need side or top entry you'll be drilling or punching it yourself and weather-sealing the hub.
4) How does the cover come off on the 12104 RTSC, and can I open it without tools?
No, it's a screw cover. The flanged cover is fastened with plated screws, so you need a driver every time you get in. For a box you'll be opening routinely, a hinged or latching door enclosure is the better choice; a screw cover suits pull points and splice boxes you rarely revisit.
5) How is this B-Line junction box fastened to the wall?
Surface mount, using embossed thru holes in the back of the box. The embossments stand the hole off the mounting surface so the enclosure keeps its seal integrity at the fastener. Anchors or screws for your wall type are not part of the box; pick them to suit masonry, stud or strut.
6) What is the 12104 RTSC made of, and will it hold up on an exterior wall?
Carbon steel at 16 gauge, painted ANSI 61 grey. That is a paint-over-steel enclosure, so it holds up outdoors while the finish is intact but will rust at scratches, drilled holes and cut edges. Touch up any field-made opening. For coastal or chemical exposure, stainless or a non-metallic 3R box is the more durable route.
7) How heavy is the 12104 RTSC, and can one person hang it?
7.2 lb empty. A single installer can hold it up and start the fasteners without help, though on overhead or ladder work it's easier to set two anchors first and hook the box onto them.
8) I need to match the grey on existing Eaton B-Line enclosures at my site. What color is this one?
