B-LINE 1284 RTSC – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can the B-Line 1284 RTSC junction box be mounted outdoors?
Yes. The Eaton B-Line 1284 RTSC is a NEMA Type 3R enclosure, which means it is built for outdoor use against falling rain, sleet and ice formation. It adds a rain hood over the cover and uses plated screws to hold up outside. It is not a washdown or dust-tight box, so pressure spray, submersion or heavy airborne dust calls for a Type 4 or 4X instead.
2) What are the box dimensions on the B-Line 1284 RTSC enclosure?
12 inches high by 8 inches wide with a 4 inch depth. Lay that out on the wall before you order, because the rain hood sits above the cover line and the flanged screw cover needs clearance to lift off straight.
3) Does this B-Line screw cover box come with conduit knockouts?
There are four knockouts in the bottom of the 1284 RTSC. Nothing in the top or sides, which is normal for a 3R box, water should never enter from above. Run your conduit up into the bottom and you keep the rating intact.
4) How does the 1284 RTSC mount to a wall or strut?
Surface mount, using embossed thru holes in the back of the box. The embossing stands the hole off the back panel so the mounting fastener does not break the seal plane. Mounting screws or anchors for your substrate are supplied by the installer.
5) What gauge steel is the B-Line 1284 RTSC made from, and will it rust outdoors?
16 gauge carbon steel, painted ANSI 61 grey. The paint and the plated cover screws are what hold up outdoors. For coastal or chemical exposure where carbon steel will eventually corrode through the coating, specify a stainless or non-metallic 4X enclosure instead.
6) Screw cover or hinged door, which should I use for an outdoor junction box?
The 1284 RTSC is a screw cover box with a flanged cover, so the cover comes fully off when you open it. That suits pull points and splice boxes you rarely enter, and it gives a cleaner rain seal. If the box houses controls or terminals a tech opens routinely, a hinged-door 3R enclosure is the better pick, since a loose cover on a ladder is how covers get dropped.
