B-LINE 664 RTSC – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the B-Line 664 RTSC junction box be mounted outdoors?
Yes. The Eaton B-Line 664 RTSC is a NEMA Type 3R enclosure, so it is intended for outdoor use where falling rain, sleet and external ice formation are the concern. It ships with a rain hood and plated screws for that service. A 3R box is not rated for hosedown or dust-tight duty, so if the location sees washdown or windblown dust you need a Type 4 or 12 enclosure instead.
2) What are the box dimensions on the B-Line 664 RTSC, and will a 6x6 backplate area fit my splice?
The enclosure measures 6 inches high, 6 inches wide and 4 inches deep, giving a 6 x 6 interior face with 4 inches of depth behind the cover. That is sized for feeder splices, small control terminal blocks or a pull point, not for mounting a sizeable device stack. Body weight is 3.1 lb.
3) Does the 664 RTSC come with knockouts, or do I have to punch my own conduit holes?
Three knockouts are provided in the bottom of the box. That is the correct location for a 3R enclosure, since raintight entry has to be made below the live parts. Any other entry point you need has to be punched in the field with a knockout punch or hole saw and sealed with a raintight fitting to keep the 3R rating.
4) How does the B-Line 664 RTSC mount to a wall or strut?
It is a surface mount box with embossed thru holes in the back. The embossing stands the box off the mounting surface so water does not sit behind it, and you fasten straight through with your own screws, bolts or strut hardware. Mounting fasteners are not part of the box, so spec anchors to suit the wall you are hitting.
5) Is the cover on the 664 RTSC hinged or screw-on?
Screw cover, flanged type. You back out the plated screws to take the whole cover off, which is fine for a junction or pull point you rarely open, but slower than a hinged door if it is a box an electrician will be in weekly. For frequent access, look for a hinged-cover 3R enclosure instead.
6) What is the 664 RTSC made of, and how well does the finish hold up outside?
Carbon steel body in 16 gauge, painted ANSI 61 grey. Painted steel is the standard choice for outdoor utility, HVAC and site lighting work, but it is not stainless: in coastal salt air or a chemical environment, expect to touch up scratches or move to a stainless or non-metallic 3R enclosure.
7) What exact part number do I order for this Eaton B-Line 6x6x4 screw cover 3R box?
Order it as 664 RTSC. The number reads as the dimensions, 6 high by 6 wide by 4 deep, followed by the RTSC enclosure designation. It is made in the US.
8) Can I standardize on this grey box to match the other enclosures on my site?
The finish is ANSI 61 grey paint, the same industry-standard grey used across most switchgear and industrial enclosures, so a 664 RTSC will read as a match next to existing panels and pull boxes on a facility. For multi-family or MRO stock, it gives you one 6x6x4 outdoor-rated box that looks consistent everywhere it lands.
