The 8836-12FW is a NEMA 12 wireway with a seamless poured-in-place gasket, so it is built to keep out dust, falling dirt, and dripping non-corrosive liquids in indoor industrial spaces. That covers machine shops, food plants outside the washdown zone, and similar duty. It is not a NEMA 3R or 4X enclosure, so do not use it outdoors, under direct hose spray, or in corrosive wet areas.

The cover is hinged along one side and held shut by screw clamps, with heavy-duty hinges carrying the weight. You back off the clamps and swing the cover rather than lifting a loose lid off a ceiling run, which is the practical reason to pick hinged over screw-cover when the trough is above head height.

The 8836-12FW is designed to be supported by wireway hangers. The hangers, connectors, end plates, elbows and any tees you need for the run are separate line items, so build them into the takeoff along with the trough sections themselves.

The section weighs 28.32 lb empty, so it is a one-man lift onto hangers for a short run, though a second set of hands helps when you are lining up a joint overhead. The trough is 14 gauge steel, which is the heavier end of wireway stock and part of why it is not featherweight.

It is certified to CSA C22.2, which is the Canadian enclosure standard referenced on Canadian electrical submittals. That plus the NEMA 12 construction is usually what a Canadian inspector wants to see on an indoor industrial trough.

Pick the hinged 12FW style when the trough will be opened repeatedly, pulled through again later, or mounted where a loose cover would be awkward or dangerous to handle. Screw-cover troughs are fine for a run you close once and forget. Here the hinge plus screw clamps still seals a NEMA 12 rating with the poured-in-place gasket, so you are not trading protection for access.

The finish is ANSI 61 gray, the standard light gray used across industrial electrical enclosures and switchgear, so it blends with most existing panel and wireway runs. If your building was painted to a custom color, it will not match.
