B-LINE 4424 GRT – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can a 4x4x24 wiring trough be used outdoors?
The B-Line 4424 GRT trough is rated NEMA 3R, which covers outdoor use against falling rain, sleet and snow. It is not a washdown or dust-tight enclosure, so for hose-down or dusty interiors you want a 4X or 12 rated trough instead. It is also CSA Certified.
2) Does the 4424 GRT trough come with knockouts already punched?
Yes, there are 7 bottom knockouts in the 4 x 4 x 24 inch trough, so you can feed conduit up into it without drilling. Side and end penetrations you make yourself.
3) What are the actual dimensions of the B-Line 4424 GRT trough?
It is a 4 inch by 4 inch cross section, 24 inches long. That gives you a 4 inch square wireway body, which is the common size for gutter and pull-box duty ahead of panels and disconnects. Shipping weight is 7.785 lb.
4) Is this a screw cover trough or a hinged cover?
Screw cover. The cover on the 4424 GRT is held by a flange and plated screws, so you back the screws out to get in. If you need frequent access for troubleshooting, a hinged-cover wireway is easier to live with; screw cover is the standard choice where the trough is opened once at install.
5) How does this wiring trough mount to a wall?
Through embossed thru holes in the back of the trough, so it fastens flat to a wall, strut or backboard. Fasteners and any strut hardware are not part of the trough, so pick them for your substrate.
6) Is a 4 inch square trough big enough for my conductors?
Wireway fill is limited to 20 percent of the interior cross section under the NEC, and a 4 x 4 inch trough gives you 16 square inches of gross area to work from. If your bundle pushes past that, step up to a 6 x 6 wireway rather than forcing it into the 4 x 4.
7) What gauge steel and what color is the B-Line GRT trough?
16 gauge steel finished in ANSI 61 gray, the standard gray used on switchgear and panelboards, so it matches adjacent electrical equipment without repainting. Screws are plated.
