B-LINE 4448 GGV – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is the Eaton B-Line 4448 GGV wireway rated for outdoor or wet locations?
No. The 4448 GGV is a NEMA 1 enclosure, which is indoor, general-purpose only, intended to keep out falling dirt and incidental contact. Do not use it outdoors, in washdown areas, or anywhere it may see rain or hose spray. For those locations you need a NEMA 3R or 4 raintight wireway with a gasketed cover instead of this screw-cover design.
2) What size is the B-Line 4448 GGV wiring trough, and how much wire can it carry?
It is a 4 x 4 inch cross section, 48 inches long, so 16 square inches of gross internal area before deducting the metal thickness. NEC limits conductor fill in a wireway to 20 percent of the cross-sectional area, which works out to roughly 3.2 square inches of conductors in a 4 x 4 trough. The body is 16 gauge galvanized steel and the piece weighs 13.247 lb, so a single installer can hang a stick without help.
3) Does this Eaton B-Line trough come with knockouts already, or do I have to punch my own?
Knockouts are already provided: 15 on the top and 15 on the bottom of the 48 inch body. That is the NK (knockout) version, so for a typical panel or gutter feed you knock out what you need and plug the rest. If you want a blank body with no pre-punched openings for a custom layout, you need a no-knockout wireway rather than this GGV NK model.
4) How does the cover come off on the 4448 GGV, and is that a problem for a trough I open often?
The cover is a screw cover, held on with plated screws along the body. It is secure and it is what most inspectors expect on a NEMA 1 gutter, but every access means backing out and reinstalling screws. If you are pulling and repulling conductors regularly, or feeding a control panel you open weekly, a hinged-cover wireway is the faster choice. For a feed-through gutter above a panelboard that gets opened once, the screw cover is fine.
5) How do I mount this B-Line wireway to a wall or to strut?
Mounting is through holes in the back of the body, so it fastens directly to a wall, a backboard, or to strut with your own hardware. No mounting brackets or fasteners are included, and none are needed if you are anchoring to plywood or masonry with your own anchors. At 13.247 lb per 48 inch stick, plan support at both ends and pick anchors to suit the substrate.
6) Will the 4448 GGV pass a Canadian inspection?
The 4448 GGV wiring trough is CSA Certified, so it is acceptable for use in Canada as well as US jobs. Keep in mind it is a NEMA 1 indoor enclosure, so the certification does not extend its use to damp or outdoor locations.
7) What finish is the 4448 GGV wireway, and will it match the gray panels already on the wall?
The body is galvanized steel finished in gray, with plated cover screws. It reads as standard industrial gray, so it sits in line with typical gray panelboards and control enclosures. The galvanized base metal gives corrosion resistance in dry indoor mechanical and electrical rooms, which is where a NEMA 1 trough belongs.
8) Is 16 gauge heavy enough for a wireway in a commercial electrical room?
Yes. 16 gauge galvanized steel is the standard body thickness for NEMA 1 screw-cover wireway in this size class and it holds its shape through a conductor pull without oil-canning. The 4 x 4 x 48 inch body weighs 13.247 lb, which is consistent with a full 16 gauge shell rather than a light-duty formed cover.
