B-LINE 8812 HS – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What size wireway is the B-Line 8812 HS, and what run length does one piece cover?
The Eaton B-Line 8812 HS is an 8 x 8 inch cross section trough, 12 inches long. That gives you a 64 square inch raceway interior for a one foot section, which is the size normally used as a gutter or pull section between panels rather than a long horizontal run. For longer runs you connect multiple sections together.
2) Can the 8812 HS wireway be installed outdoors or in a washdown area?
No. It is a NEMA 1 enclosure, which is general purpose indoor only, with no protection against water or dust. Wet locations, outdoor runs, or hosedown areas need a NEMA 3R or 4 rated trough instead.
3) How does the 8812 HS mount, and is hardware included?
Mounting is by thru holes in the back of the body, so you fasten it directly to a wall, strut, or backpan with your own screws, bolts, or strut hardware. Fasteners are not part of the trough, so size them to the substrate. At 7 lb empty it hangs off standard wall anchors, but plan support for conductor weight and for any adjoining sections.
4) Where can conduit enter this wiring trough without me drilling it?
There are 3 knockouts on the top and 3 on the bottom, so vertical conduit drops and risers land without field drilling. Side and end entries are not pre-punched, so if you are feeding horizontally from a panel you will be making your own openings.
5) How does the hinged cover on this B-Line trough open, and do I need tools to get into it?
The cover is hinged along one side, so it swings open and stays attached to the body. It is held shut with plated screws, so you need a driver to release it, but you are not handling a loose cover on a ladder the way you would with a screw cover trough. Hinged is the usual choice where you expect to be pulling or re-terminating conductors repeatedly.
6) Is the 8812 HS heavy enough gauge for a commercial installation?
The body is 14 gauge steel, which is the standard weight for commercial screw cover and hinged wireway and stiff enough to take conduit loading at the knockouts without oil canning. Finish is ANSI 61 gray paint, the usual switchgear gray, so it matches panelboards and gutter already on the wall.
7) Will this B-Line trough pass a Canadian inspection?
It is built to CSA C22.2, so it carries the Canadian standard for the enclosure as well as being a standard NEMA 1 indoor product. That matters if you are specifying for a jurisdiction that requires CSA marking on raceway components.
8) Should I use a hinged cover wireway like this or a screw cover type?
Pick hinged, as with the 8812 HS, where the trough is a working junction you will open again: feeder splices, control wiring, anything being added to over time. A screw cover section is fine where the box gets closed once and forgotten, and it is often the lighter choice for long straight runs. Both are NEMA 1 indoor raceway; the difference is access, not protection.
