1) Can the Eaton B-Line 8836 GRT wiring trough be used outdoors?
The 8836 GRT is a NEMA 3R enclosure, so it is intended for outdoor use where rain and falling water need to be shed. It is steel with an ANSI 61 gray finish and the cover is held by a flange plus plated screws to keep water out at the seam. For washdown, hosedown, or dust-tight duty you need a 4 or 4X rated trough instead.
2) Does the 8836 GRT trough come with knockouts, or do I have to punch my own conduit openings?
There are 11 knockouts in the bottom of the trough, so bottom-feeding conduit into the gutter needs no field punching. Entries on the ends or sides do have to be drilled or punched to your conduit size.
3) How do you mount an 8-inch B-Line wiring trough to a wall?
The 8836 GRT has embossed thru holes in the back for direct wall or strut mounting, so you fasten through the body rather than adding brackets. Mounting hardware and anchors are sized to your substrate and are not part of the trough.
4) Is the cover on this B-Line trough hinged or screwed?
Screw cover. The 8836 GRT uses a full screw-on cover retained by a flange and plated screws, which is the standard arrangement for a 3R gutter where the joint has to stay weather resistant. If you need frequent access without backing out screws, look for a hinged-cover trough instead.
5) What gauge steel is the 8836 GRT wiring trough, and is it certified?
Body and cover are 16 gauge steel, finished in ANSI 61 gray, and the trough is CSA Certified. That is the common weight for an 8 x 8 gutter carrying feeder splices in a mechanical room or on an exterior wall.
6) Will the ANSI 61 gray finish match the rest of my gear?
ANSI 61 gray is the standard gray used across most switchgear, panelboards and enclosures, so the 8836 GRT trough lines up visually with typical electrical equipment in a room. It is a painted steel finish, not stainless.

Yes, 8 x 8 troughs are routinely coupled end to end to extend a run, and the 8836 GRT gives you 36 inches per section. The end openings have to be prepped and joined in the field, and connectors or couplings are ordered separately from the trough itself.
