1) Can the B-Line 8812 GRT wiring trough be mounted outdoors?
The 8812 GRT is a NEMA 3R rated trough, so it is built for outdoor use where rain and sleet are the concern, mounted in the normal upright orientation. NEMA 3R does not cover washdown, hosedown, or dust-tight service; for those you need a 4 or 12 rated enclosure instead. The steel body carries an ANSI 61 gray finish and the cover seals against a flange with plated screws.
2) What size is the B-Line 8812 GRT trough inside, and how much wire can I run through it?
It is an 8 x 8 inch cross section, 12 inches long. Under the NEC, a wireway's conductor fill is limited to 20 percent of the cross-sectional area, so the 8 by 8 opening gives you 64 square inches gross to work from. Short 12 inch length means it is usually used as a pull or splice point between panels or gutters rather than a long run.
3) Does the B-Line 8812 GRT trough come with knockouts already, or do I have to punch my own?
There are 3 knockouts in the bottom of the trough as supplied. Any other entry point, sides, ends, or top, has to be punched in the field with a knockout set. Because the knockouts are only on the bottom, it suits a layout where conduit rises into the trough from below or from panels mounted underneath.
4) How does the cover come off the B-Line 8812 GRT trough for pulling wire?
It is a screw cover, not a hinged one. The cover sits against a flange and is held by plated screws, so you back the screws out to open it and reinstall them to close. Plan for a screwdriver and somewhere to set the cover during the pull; if you want a cover you can swing open one-handed on a ladder, look for a hinged cover trough instead.
5) How do you mount the 8812 GRT trough to a wall or strut?
The back has embossed thru holes, so it bolts straight to a wall, backboard, or strut run without drilling the enclosure. Mounting hardware and anchors are supplied by the installer to suit the substrate. At 9.59 lb empty it is a one-person hang, but size your anchors for the loaded weight once conductors are in.
6) Is 16 gauge steel heavy enough for a commercial wiring trough?
The 8812 GRT is formed from 16 gauge steel, which is the usual body thickness for NEMA 3R wireway of this size and holds its shape when conduit is landed on it and the cover screws are torqued.
