1) Does the Eaton Comet retroreflective photoelectric sensor need a reflector, or does it detect the target directly?
It is a polarized retroreflective sensor, so it needs a reflector mounted opposite the sensor. The beam leaves the sensor, bounces off the reflector, and returns; a target breaking that path is what triggers the output. The polarizing filter is what lets it ignore light bouncing off shiny cans, film wrap or stainless parts, which is the usual failure mode with a plain retroreflective head. A reflector is not part of the sensor itself, so plan on ordering one for the job.
2) What is the difference between the two Eaton Comet sensor versions, 14101A6517 and 14102R6513?
It comes down to how the output switches. Part 14101A6517 is the NPN and PNP open collector version, the one you wire to a DC PLC input or a DC load. Part 14102R6513 is the AC version with L1 switched, meaning the sensor switches the AC line leg to the load. Pick the DC open collector unit for control-panel and PLC work; pick the AC L1 switched unit when the sensor is feeding an AC device directly.
3) Can this photoelectric sensor be used in a washdown area?
Yes. The Comet sensor is rated NEMA 1, 3, 4, 4X, 6, 12 and 13, plus IP69K, which covers high-pressure, high-temperature washdown. The enclosure is polyurethane foam (RIM) and the lead is PVC cable. NEMA 4X means it also stands up to the corrosive cleaners used in food and beverage plants.
4) Will this sensor hold up in a freezer or an unheated outdoor conveyor line?
The operating range runs from -40 F to 158 F, so cold storage, freezer docks and unheated outdoor material handling are all inside the window. The top end also covers hot packaging and shrink-tunnel areas. Note that PVC cable stiffens badly at the low end, so route and clamp the lead before it gets cold rather than flexing it in place.
5) Is this an 18mm barrel sensor that fits a standard tubular mounting bracket?
Yes, it is an 18mm tubular housing, which is the most common barrel size in industrial automation and drops into standard 18mm brackets and clearance holes. Published body dimensions are .71 in height and .47 in width. A bracket and jam nuts are what you mount it with; budget for those separately.
